    Worst Job I've Ever Had

I worked at Ulta Beauty part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

At the beginning the pros were my coworkers, managers, and the employee 25% discount. By the end of my time working there these all became cons.

    Cons

No, I am not just a disgruntled employee who just got fired. I actually left my job on very good terms with the people I worked with. That being said...
Management was the worst. One of my managers was bullied into resigning from her position because the others didn't like her. Her position was opened and filled by one of the favorites before any of us were told she had resigned, therefore no one was able to apply. I ended up doing only truck shipments and adsets, which was great because I absolutely hated the customers we dealt with.
However, management is trained not to give a crap. I went to my manager explaining my husband lost his job and I really needed as many hours as she could give me. She said she'd see what she could do. I actually ended up with worse hours.
The discount is great until you realize you could go get a full-time job somewhere that will pay you halfway decent and you'll be able to afford what you want to buy there in the first place. And yes, I agree. Some Ulta's could be great to work at and it really could just be the people. But in my opinion, the company itself is awful and doesn't care about it's lower-end staff, which is why you hear that the majority of management is completely horrible. Because they're trained that way.
I was in this job for 11 months, staying only in hopes that it would get better, and it only ever got worse.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop gossiping about employees and other management in general, but especially in front of employees. Practice what you preach.

I have been working at Ulta Beauty full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Discount is good and the only thing that kept me here most of the time. Genuinely enjoyed working with makeup and beauty products.

    Cons

Majority of store managers don't do anything. Associate managers are allowed to terrorize stores and micro manage everyone. No positive reinforcement or even constructive criticism. You're made to feel like you're doing a terrible job even though you're doing everything you can to not drown in all of the tasks you're faced with. District managers are nonexistent in stores and don't care about a single employee. Store policies are not followed across the board which leads to customers getting pissed off. EXTREMELY high turn over rate but corporate doesn't seem to notice and/or care. You're promised hours when you interview that you'll never actually get. Every single upper level employee is unhappy and looking for another job, which creates an unhappy work environment and affects lower level associates. There is no room to grow within this company (even though I advise against growing with this company at all) because the DMs will only give promotions to people who fit the "look" that Ulta wants and not people who will actually work hard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually care about what's going on in your stores. Do more than a pathetic "culture survey" (which is actually NOT anonymous like they claim it is. Your DM can see who says what. MISLEADING) and make sure your DMs are active in their stores. There are absolutely no checks and balances with this company and it allows managers to become power hungry.

I worked at Ulta Beauty part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Nothing was a pro with this store and company

    Cons

Daily operations very unorganized. Did not receive proper training. Pay rates very low. Constant issues with payroll. Store Management and DM were always frantic. This Management team had a severe lack of communication which supported a catty, blame shifting, chaotic environment. DISGUSTINGLY POOR ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS. Company wastes SO much money: Fixtures and displays (that could be reused or sent back to corporate) were thrown out on a daily basis.
Strangest work experience I have ever had.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Work on listening, and overall communication skills.
-Make sure all new hires are properly and fully trained.
-IMPLEMENT RECYCLING PROGRAM. It would benefit the environment and your company!

    Pros

    25% discount
Can use your discount in combination with your loyalty rewards

    Cons

GM's never leave their office, no training...focus placed on tasking not the customer ...gossiping/cattiness...no payroll hours! Only 2 people closing on a busy Saturday...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

my GM never left her office...she never walked her sales floor to ensure things were getting done...from 8am-5pm she was locked in the office...the schedule would change every week so she would never close...some weeks she only worked 30 hours...it was a disaster but I've heard from co workers at other stores this is the norm...GMs are really office managers...even on busy weekends...
DMs need to be more aware of what's going on in their district...their is no training available and you only move up if you have a "polished look" or by some chance you get promoted out of desperation...the fact that their are so many open positions across the board should be an indication that the company has issues...the turnover rate is horrendous...this allure of the discount couldn't keep me there...
And the clientele is terrible too...I had a lady yell at me because she couldn't use her 20% coupon on a naked palette when she already had redeemed $12 off in rewards points! I told her the coupons do not apply to prestige! I can't!

    Pros

Good pay compared to other retail stores. Employee discount. Gratis.

    Cons

The employees have to be the police of the store making sure theft doesn't occur.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I couldn't believe what store managers were getting away with. There isn't enough overview at this company.

I worked at Ulta Beauty part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The best thing that came from working here besides for the experience I needed coming right out of school, was learning the Dermalogica product line and having the support of the instructors and fellow estis at the International Dermal Institute.

    Cons

The pay is measly, hardly allowing you to maintain self sufficiency. If you don't have another source of income, I highly suggest avoiding this job. The pay structure for this is rigged so that you only make pennies off of a sale. I didn't even make $200 in product commission in nearly a year and a half and I sold a lot of product! There was no support from members of management and I was constantly made to feel like I was not good enough. You will spend a large amount of time walking the store to try to get shoppers to get services with you. If you don't want to be a sales associate, don't be an esthetician here...its part of the job. The treatment area is laughable. No enclosed room, no relaxing music. Just a half wall in the back corner of the store under florescents where your clients can hear phones ringing and screaming kids. I was embarrassed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take your salon employees seriously. This is the career they chose and need to be supported so that they can succeed. Dermapods where a step in the wrong direction. The dermapod doesn't allow for body waxing, the brow bar took the facial waxing. It's hard enough to make a living without being forced to cut services. Estheticians need to make higher product commission and their entire pay scale needs to be reevaluated. I would consider renaming the position, "esthetician/store associate," or just getting rid of having a esti in the store all together. The environment is not conducive to employing an esti that actually takes their job seriously.

I worked at Ulta Beauty full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The occasional gratis (aka free products for brand training).

    Cons

Little to no payroll. Just enough hours for your management team to be cashiers and run a sales floor and complete numerous other tasks, while trying to provide outstanding customer service.
Lack of training/development to ensure you are successful.
Most store managers are extremely lazy and expect their teams to run their stores.
Compensation could definitely be better, they tempt you with a chance to bonus (it rarely happens).
    Never received a raise.
As a manager you are held responsible for a lot (to run a store), however, you are not given the time or proper training to be successful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a company, there should be a focus on developing associates and payroll to support the values of customer service that it preaches. It's impossible to deliver the level of service that Ulta strives to provide while not giving the stores the resources it needs in order to be successful (payroll and training in particular). Also, they should really look at hiring people who are the right fit...not just anyone who applies. Unfortunately there are a lot of people in the company who are selfish and don't care about their associates and treat people like crap!
