I have been working at Unilever (more than a year)

    Pros

    WONDERFUL people to work with
BIG company culture, international company gives opportunity to work with a very diverse group of people.
Free tea and coffee all day
Company store!! - buy most Unilever products at just above cost
    Decent salary and benefits

    Cons

Foods business isn't doing as amazingly as they want so there are tons of hire freezes and downsizing going on. They seem to take away more and more of the "perks" of working here every year. If you are in the Lisle group it is much smaller and every year people wonder how much longer the office there is going to last. The only other location (for non-plant workers) is Englewood Cliffs, NJ or Trumbull, CT which doesn't leave many options. They are currently changing systems and none of it was thought out well. North America needs to take all specifications from Europe yet there are different standards and regulations that it just isn't working. IT is outsourced to India so it's almost impossible to get your computer issues fixed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop taking away all the money and perks of working here!

I have been working at Unilever full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work/Life Balance - Very Flexible and understanding.
Good People - Even the manager regardless of business decisions are cool people. For me they passed the beer test.

    Cons

Small and getting smaller - My prediction is that in five years food solutions will not be in Lisle.
Not much opportunity - If you are looking to climb the corporate ladder this is not the place.
Old - If you consider yourself a young professional and looking for a YP atmosphere this is not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be up front with employees especially new hires about the development and oppurtunities available at the shrinking Food Service portion of Unilever.

I have been working at Unilever full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers, great brands, perks, training

    Cons

Life work balance is messed up! They aren't replacing people as they leave and expect current employees to pick up the slack. There used to be five people in my current territory...now there is only one. They are also beginning to micro-manage every aspect of the sales cycle. They keep adding extra work and expect things not to fall through the cracks. Stress levels are extremely high among my peers and morale is low. Unilever wants to double in size by 2015 and I'm sure they will do it, but they are working their current employees to death.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people! Please reward us for hitting all of our targets as a company for the first time ever!!

    Cons

HR is horribly insensitive and antiquated, family mobility's a must so it's hard on two career families and kids.

    Pros

The best reason to work for Unilever is to get a solid multinational company on your resume. You will also have access to a CPG machine and can understand how the supply chain interacts with brand. If you are in a corporate function you will be working in very nice areas (Connecticut, Chicago, Northern Jersey). If you are in a manufacturing function you will have access to a job board that can take you all over the country, gaining experience in manufacturing foods and personal care products. You will have access to union environments as well as nonunion. It is also neat to be able to reveal some of what is behind the curtain on some of their favorite products.

    Cons

Work many hours. In some cases, advancement is given to people with seniority and not skill. There are a lot of people there that continue to be employed because there isn't enough time for managers to work up a dossier on how bad their people are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out how to get to market first, instead of following P&G all day. But you know this. Maybe you can hire better people and pay them more to stay!
