Review of Unilever plc July 2012

Assistant CMI Manager (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsThe culture here is fantastic and its a great place to learn. Fantastic brands to work on and inspirational senior management.

Conscompared to other FMCG companies of this size and smaller renumeration is significantly below average. Opportunities are good but progression is often limited by internal politics / not enough roles coming up

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Work is motivational most of the time and people great.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros-Great people, interesting work on a large and international scale.
-Sustainability is really part of what we do in nearly all things.

Cons-In some areas of the business the org structure is very flat, so you cannot delegate or have the opportunity to manage teams. Its the matrix organisation at its best, so if you are a networker this is not really a contra indicator.
-New people to the business may find it hard to intergrate, make sure you have a couple of 'buddies' to translate the acronyms and introduce the informal culture.
-Bonus scheme for low and middle management a little disappointing.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more courageous with promotions.

    good stepping stone.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsIt is a great opportunity to grow and learn from others. There are opportunities to move up if you are motivated.

ConsIn order to move up, you must be visible - that is, your oral communication must be great so others can see that too.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo appreciate the employees more and provide more bonuses and raises. They are why you are so successful so treat them welll.

Good company that respects its employees, its customers, and the environment.

ProsUnilever employees are down to earth, and actually care about the work they do. Overall, the company stresses ethics, and tries to make the workplace feel small in your individual responsibilities, but yet linked to a huge multinational resource.

ConsSome of the work I was assigned was routine, and not the most challenging. Additionally, I felt like there were not many outlets for new ideas.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more challenging projects, and more responsibility to younger employees. Also, encourage new ideas and creativity, and create an environment where learning and problem solving is the norm.

    Good place

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThere's a lot of very nice and good people from my experience. Good benefits, reasonable managers and if you are really passionate, you can go places.

ConsJust like any big companies, there's pressure to perform. Still gotta make the money and give them the results they want.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers should make more of an effort to learn what was done from the previous organization and ask feedbacks from their employess what works and what doesn't

A great company to work on the whole

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat culture, Good benefits, Cares about people, Great for the CV, opportunies to travel. Good benefits. Good bonus. Growing business.

ConsIt is quite bureacratic and slow as a place to work. Hierarchical and paternalistic culture. Does not feel like people are empowered to get things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe business needs to to be simplified so that things do not take so long. The vision is great so good to continue with the work that has been done there.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
