San Diego, CA

Former Employee – worked at Union Bank N.A. full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat benefits, great overall company values, training classes

ConsManagement of specific groups was awful

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to how many people are going out on leave and watch the trends of groups and how many people are being let go or quitting - this is an indication there is something wrong and management must be held accountable for the bad morale and high turn-over.

Sacramento, CA

Current Employee – been working at Union Bank N.A. full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompetitive pay, easy for tenured employees to keep their job (unless branch closures prevent that)

ConsSr Management is floundering in this low rate environment. Rates and regulations have DRASTICALLY cut profits, Sr managements pursues non-sensical initiatives and abandons them part way, such as scrapping a multi-BILLION dollar systems update after realizing it was not compatible with any of our existing systems, (whoops?) Mid-management continues to turn up the pressure and stress, while handing down layoffs, announcing branch closures, and setting impossible "stretch" goals and non-stop "campaigns". Morale is at an all time low and doesn't seem to be changing any time soon.

Advice to Senior ManagementStep 1: Determine a target market (are we targeting the affluent and understanding the low volume that entails?, or are we mass market realizing quality of client will suffer?). Step 2: learn how to win within that market using excellent service and specific product. Step 3: deploy a plan that sets realistic goals, backed by sufficient marketing, and supported by all departments.

Los Angeles, CA

Former Employee – worked at Union Bank N.A. full-time for less than a year

ProsExcellent Health Benefits (several plans to choose from)
Annual Profit Bonus on top of salary (discretionary)
Defined Benefit Pension (5+ years of service required)

ConsMicromanagement at its best from top down--no room for "impact" players to grow...If your not part of "clique"--they will make your life miserable.
Local Managers have no discretionary control to manage their teams (must get approval from Board of Directors for major decisions)
Disorganized, Archaic, & confusing org structure
Technology is dated and old (they still require you to use deposit slips/envelopes at their ATM's)
Equipment & Office in their LA HQ is old; needs serious updating & modernization

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior Management needs to be fully overhauled for company to be more efficient & effective. C-Level needs to be seriously re-evaluated with less bureaucracy & fragmentation (this is an American firm based in the US--you can not continue to run it like that of firms back Japan, even though the Japanese own the firm).

San Diego, CA

Former Employee – worked at Union Bank N.A. full-time for less than a year

ProsNot physically intensive, co-workers are friendly.

ConsDisorganized, unable to get information quickly, lack of communication between departments, unable to decide on a policy and stick with it (wishy washy), poor work life balance, customer service is non-existant unless you are a high value client, management hides... Does not communicate.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart getting the departments organized and flowing on the same page, communicate to staff, and provide 24/7 customer service. The departments are disorganized, its time consuming to find the right information/people when needed, no real sense of pride within the company.

Los Angeles, CA

Former Employee – worked at Union Bank N.A. full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat colleagues and a very collaborative culture. Good job security with all the bells and whistles of working at a major bank.

ConsCulture began to change with a change in management. Not as collegial and overly risk sensitive.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe focus on risk management while admirable in today's environment has led to the placement of risk focused management in very senior positions, handicapping the business' ability to maximize profitability.
