    Pros

The company treats it's employees well and pays well. They have a family oriented work environment with reasonable expectations. Good training and supportive management. One of the few organizations that still have a solid retirement program - pension, not 401K, although they offer that too.

    Cons

Plenty of politics as with any large company. Bureaucratic at times and highly focused on profits and reporting.

    I worked at Union Pacific

    Pros

Company has spent alot of capital on infrastructure which makes it more viable during hard economic times.

Benefits are top tier. Retirement is something to envy.

    Cons

Field managers are run hard with long days and variable days off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Quality of life is important.

    Pros

Great salary, benefits, work environment, and great opportunity for career advancement right away. All the managers are friendly and easy to talk to.

    Cons

In the beginning be prepared to give up a lot of your personal life. This is not your typical Mon thru Friday job. You give up a lot of personal time but they make up for it in your compensation. It'll be a while before you're able to get a set schedule and even then that schedule could mean still working some afternoon shifts and some overnight shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees more. Instead of changing the rules to what seems easiest and most convenient for you, get us involved. Ask what we would like to see changed. And for God's sake... Get a new vending service. Those guys are ridiculous and their machines are junk.

I have been working at Union Pacific part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Everyone is important! Interns even do quality work, not just making copies and coffee.

    Cons

The atrium is astounding, but once you're upstairs its nothing special. The carpet and walls could use an upgrade.

I have been working at Union Pacific full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay is good. The benefits are good as well but seem like they may be more expensive. UP offers a challenging work environment in a good way. Perfect place to work for someone who gets bored with their job because portions of it will continually change and you can always just bid somewhere else and do something different.

    Cons

They preach safety is the key to success. I believe this too, but it seems we are way to quick to terminate people over smaller things, then when something more severe happens to a person higher up in the company... It gets swept under the rug. We are starting a new process to educate and use others mistakes and experiences to educate everyone else. Being union is a good thing because they have fought for what we have now, but they have been deemed pretty worthless here as of late. Seems like a waste of dues. But!! That's all part of the game.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes you should self-reflect and think why your employees think the way they do and try and fix the cause of it because it lies with in you. Other than that... It's about par.

    Pros

Many opportunities for changing careers within the company. Cross-department experience is highly valued. Flexible work schedules, true to work-life balance initiatives. Pay is very competitive. Total safety culture.

    Cons

Located in Omaha, great family city but not recommended for young adults. There's an older workforce, which can be challenging with new ideas and processes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is amazing as it is. Relocating to a larger city would help retain a younger workforce.
