Current Employee - Intern - Hourly in Granite City, IL

I have been working at United States Steel as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Pay is relatively high, nice personnel, plant tours are fun, solid work level, consistent new problems encountered, program is setup so people work at their own pace to handle projects effectively (within reason and varying logic). Overall a good place to come in day after day.

    Cons

Negative outlook of some personnel drain the positive attitude of a lot, customer service program is in dire need of restructuring, potential brain drain is coming very soon. Limited upward mobility for those looking to grow within the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage more lateral movement, beef up MA program to encounter more in the field hands on training, job shadow personnel more, improve IT program, enable better process control mechanisms to detect production issues, invest in a solid training program to retain personnel.

    Pros

    Paid well for job skill

    Cons

trying to improve the bottom line

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be sure all the plants are operating at 90 % production . You should not buy a steel company unless you know it will have enough orders . There is to much cost in operating all these plants at low levels of production . Also you need to process every ton to a finish product as much as we can to increase the profit of the product . We could process more of the coils into more of a finish product .
