    Pros

The compensation and benefits are good. Managers can earn overtime which can boost your income by 30%. It is a dynamic work environment that is a machine lover's paradise.

    Cons

The physical conditions in the work place can be very hot and dirty. The hours can be long and unpredictable. You can be forcibly reassigned without warning. The company's bureaucracy is often stifling and the management culture relies more on pressure and intimidation than encouragement and empowerment.

    Advice to Management

While the Carnegie Way initiative is an attempt to bring about much needed changes, it is a very cumbersome methodology. Employees and managers are encouraged to submit improvement ideas, but are then forced to meet in committees to discuss and charter them, present updates weekly, and explain why lofty goals were not achieved. Many conscientious employees have recognized that simply quietly making good business decisions is a more effective and less burdensome way to help the Company.

    Pros

It's an older company that has had a lot of potential with deep pockets and market share. The Carnegie way can help with the correct buy in.

    Cons

Keeping the good ole boy network in full affect. The typical weak management applies here. Whipping the horse that pulls hardest. Won't train employees in their box and hold them accountable after three months of training. Won't survive with their good ole network and tight night b.s. like they have in lorain.

    Advice to Management

I don't think they would listen to any advice. There has become a major new established club there and I don't see that changing.

    Pros

Great Salary Daily challenges that enhance your management skills

    Cons

Department Communication Advancement Opportunities are limited

    Advice to Management

Upper management need to value more of the front line supervision more. Need more communication which address issues such as safety, quality, production and the business outlook.

    Pros

Great pay (for now) Great benefits (for now) All of the OT you want (for now) Continuing education available to employees (for now) Pension plan and the option to participate in 401k (for now)

    Cons

Poor management has run the company into the ground. A union busting CEO has taken over and looks to be taking a hard stance on the upcoming contract negotiations. This has created a lot of uncertainty as to what the future direction of company is for hourly and salary employees.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is the same as what it would be for hourly employees: if you are not flexible and ready to accept major changes, start looking for a new job. They are in the middle of a major transition that may or may not be for the best for the company.

    Pros

USS teaches and trains its employees well, which is a plus for you when you realize you're a pon and want to put your skill set to work for a more competitive company.

    Cons

Your superior and other personnel in the organization will not know how to do most of what your daily business requires, but will do their best to act as though they do. Outside sales reps will ask you questions that you might think a 4th grader would ask, ie how many pounds are in a ton? This will become your nightmare.

    Pros

Very safe environment. I've never been asked to do anything remotely dangerous. Also a very friendly atmosphere. Employees are generally happy and friends are easy to make.

    Cons

Layoffs. So many layoffs it makes job security something more in the realm of nostalgia than a reality. No individual raises. Either everyone gets a raise, or no one does. Amount of raises. Something along the lines of 20¢ a year.

    Advice to Management

What management? My manager got laid off along with a lot of others. No one's job is safe it seems. Hopefully when business picks up you guys will get called back.
