I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Diversity of function, assignments. Customer Service, Prior Authorization, Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacists. There are also many opportunities for Specialty Team members. Great atmosphere and good training!

    Cons

Utilizes UHG offsite recruiters for all positions. This hinders the opportunity for top performers who have developed specific skills and relationships from always being considered for promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Redesign the INTERNAL Hiring / promotion system to allow INTERNAL candidates to bypass the external recruitment services.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are a person who is numbers-driven & enjoys improving based on company generated stats, you can do very well here. There is ample opportunity for advancement and pay scale & benefits are good.

    Cons

Individual strengths are not seen or acknowledged when they counter the required & stated metrics of the job. For instance, a phone center rep who takes the extra time to completely resolve the customer's is docked because handle time is excessive. This agent has excellent quality on calls but doesn't end calls until the customer is satisfied & issue resolved. There's something wrong with that and management refuses to see it.

    Pros

    Steady work...overtime available if needed.

    Cons

mandatory overtime draining. Metrics driven environment can be annoying. Felt like High school sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overworking employees with mandatory overtime will cause them to leave.

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Management in Talent Acquisition is very flexible, they allow me to work from home as needed to accommodate my long commute and times of bad weather.
There are many opportunities within the company to move around into other areas of the business.

    Cons

I work off hours quite a bit just to keep up with all of the work that needs to be done. It is difficult to take a day off of work because there is too much work to do and not enough resources.

    Pros

The best things about working here is the team atmosphere. I worke with very talented, intelligent, and nice people. Pay is good as well.

    Cons

For being an insurance company you'd think they would offer great benefits. Not so much, the benefits are just ok.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work. Don't forget who we are serving and how important their needs are. Also, thanks for being responsive to solid improvement ideas from the rank and file.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very cool job where you just go into your assigned hospitals, identify the accounts that have the largest overpayments, and work the math problems and do the paperwork to turn in so that the appropriate party gets their money refunded. Pay was decent, coworkers were fantastic and benefits were good. You must be a people person and know how to build and maintain good working relationships with the hospitals at which you contract.

    Cons

Once in a while, you'll have a "team-member" who may try to steal accounts to work out of your assigned account queue. You just have to watch for this and report it to management to keep things fair, otherwise, you're letting your coworker pretty much steal money that would be yours. The only other cons were the layoffs we had in 2009 and 2010.

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with were wonderful and were like family. The site promoted employee engagement and the salary was very fair.

    Cons

Too many stringent corporate policies which stifled creativity and innovation. Micro-management takes the joy out of doing one's job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop micro-managing and allow the various sites to do what they do best. They don't have to be clones of each other.
