I have been working at Universal Health Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

All the hours you could want.
    Ok benefits.

    Cons

    Over working staff.
Scheduler needs to update the schedule when someone calls in.
Low pay. (Nurses get 4 dollar raise while the old techs stay at $9.30 an hour. New techs start at $12.00. Assuming we won't find out.)
Even with a doctors note you are still left on the schedule to leave them short handed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retrain the scheduler and don't assume that if you give one group raises that another won't find out.

I worked at Universal Health Services

    Pros

National presence and good asset base. Company is standardizing their healthcare infrastructure and support model.

    Cons

Corporate is distant and unresponsive to facility management and direction needs. Support model for urgent issues is non existent and recurring issues go unresolved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on the business line and become more involved and interested in the operations at the locations.

I worked at Universal Health Services

    Pros

Wonderful staff, Well appointed and clean facility, excellent work--great opportunity to experience mental health service provision with variety of patients and a variety of issues. Demands clinical versatility and working with patients is generally very satisfying

    Cons

"census rules all". Many times it felt as if staff were pawns who, when their use had expired, or money could be saved through send homes, RIF, or exaggerated violations, would be dismissed or relieved of duty. The overall atmosphere was very focused on the hospital's financial health rather than the patients'

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Experience the hospital from every level: patient, housekeeping, techs, nursing, therapy, admission, business, and cafeteria to better understand your staff, the perceptions of staff and how the focus on the census tends to invalidate much of the effort put toward patient care

I have been working at Universal Health Services

    Pros

team working is excellent. employees work very hard.

    Cons

staff management is horrible. If you are asking us to stay for double-shift every single day, go figure, something is wrong with your staffing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let's start with hiring more employees to meet the need of the hospital.

Former Employee - Mental Health Therapist in Arlington, TX

I worked at Universal Health Services full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I liked having regular morning meetings with staff so that I knew what was going on each day (even though this might mean finding out that morning that I was going to be doing someone else's job that day because they did't come to work). I think they 'tried' to give some little 'reward incentives' occasionally, but they were very little "rewards"

    Cons

The pay is very low compared to other companies. The work load was ridiculous....because there were not enough paid staff to get everything done. Most of my coworkers put in overtime hours (unpaid, of course) regularly....simply because there was too much work to be done in each day. "Training" was almost non exsistant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put your employees first ....above your own interest in large profits...and don't treat us like we are disposable.

I have been working at Universal Health Services full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great team of Behavioral Health staff trying to make a difference in kids lives. Beautiful new facility. Pay is fair.

    Cons

Too many changes in administration!! We finally had a great CEO and she was caring, compassionate, visionary, and always available. UHS came in and let her go for no good reason. Best leader I ever worked for in all my years. Inspiring! Now just one leader after another and the regional corporate staff is disrespectful and disruptive and knows very little about what is really going on in Chicago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to the staff that work at the facility before making useless decisions. Have some consistency in facility leaders.

I worked at Universal Health Services

    Pros

Decent benefits. Several good leaders. Attempting to change culture to a quality driven organization.

    Cons

Promote "yes men" and folks who just are content and stay.
    Do not fulfill promises
Micromanagement from the top level, including C suite
Professional accomplishments are overshadowed by personal feelings that are never based on facts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow your talent in house better. Develop leaders by creating actual plans that have real actionable goals. Think about the patients more than the bottom line.

    Pros

I honestly can just say it's a job.

    Cons

Benefits are horrible and constantly get cut. Only care about filling beds and how to profit from whose in them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should focus more on your employees. Happier work environment and perks make for better workers; therefore a better company. Look at Google.

Increase salaries to be competitive with your competition.
