It's okay for now, but I would not recommend U of C as a permanent employer

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Some of the people here are really quite caring. Most are here to log the hours and collect the paycheque.

    Cons

Speaking of the paycheque, it is not a good one. U of C has a reputation for paying fairly. I cannot speak to the pay for the professors, but that of the staff is appalling.

I have been working at University of Calgary

    Pros

Planning to become one of top universities in Canada
Good collaborations with industries (primarily oil and gas)
Nice design of recently constructed buildings like Taylor Family Library

    Cons

High density of students and buildings

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase quality of services along quantity

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There was a fairly positive work environment in my graduate program department which allowed me to network and make good connections

    Cons

Advertise generous entrance awards for grad students and these were given to a minority of students doing lab work only. The awards, travel funds and funding in general is quite limited, for example, you are only eligible for 1 travel award per degree of $500 max.

I have been working at University of Calgary full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexibility in hours, vacation. 4 weeks vacation, plus 1 week off during the holidays. Good benefits

    Cons

Things get done really slow, leadership could be a lot better. Not as exciting, no recognition for great work, very rarely they give bonuses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See your employees more often, have a chat with them, or take them to team outings. Appreciate them more often. Be open and transparent. Make this a fun and exciting workplace.

I have been working at University of Calgary part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with (front line staff) were very nice and made the job bearable. The facilities are very nice on campus and students are generally in a good mood when chatting with them. Pay was decent for what the job entailed.

    Cons

HR seemed unorganized with payment methods and letting staff know about timesheet submittal and approval processes. Scheduling methods could also be improved.

I have been working at University of Calgary

    Pros

The general pros of academia: flexible hours, minimal oversight.

    Cons

U of C thinks it's better than it is. The 'silo mentality' is particularly bad, and the Deans and up don't seem to see it or care.

I have been working at University of Calgary

    Pros

The pace is slow, a relax city. Environment is great. The city is quiet. A good place is to live.

    Cons

No serious research. People here are practical. Salary here is really low except in oil company. The whole city is bureaucratic.

Location, parking, may appear prestigious, new President

    Cons

self-serving culture that may eat any emerging strategy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to Management and Professional staff. Do not put academics into Dean or other executive management positions unless they have management and leadership experience and do not let Deans skip a level.
