    Research Assistant

Research Assistant (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsI worked as a research assistant in the Dept. of Chemistry. Nice flexible hours. Pursue my desired research project.

ConsPay is not good enough to support your living if you are married or have a family. The university has very annoying supply and chain management dept.

Worked as a student worker in multiple positions.

MM Assistant (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsConvenience of location, good pay, treated well by supervisors and other coworkers.

ConsOften lacking direction about where to best put their student workers. My position had projects that had minimal direction, leading me to propose things that were ultimately rejected.

I worked 2 years at the University of Calgary

Instructor (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

    ProsThe people are nice, helpful.
The availability of positions is good.
The city has lots of mountain and views around the university.

ConsThe city is pretty cold, since it has a long winter.
The teaching is heavier than average, in the university level.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore flexible in moving from one teaching position to professional position.

Kickstart your experience with undegrad research

Undergraduate Researcher (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsFriendly supervisors, lots of ideas, great community

ConsUnderpaid, upper management/ethics has a lot of overhead and it takes time to get a reply from them

Advice to Senior ManagementI worked at the Interactions Lab and didn't have a lot of issues; since my supervisor was busy, it was hard to get mentorship, but overall I was pleased. However, the upper management at the UofC can be improved. Financial decisions should be based on the students rather than the staff (e.g. renovations for Admin), and the SU should make better decisions for spending and opportunities for students (rather than just events/parties).

Studying chemistry at the University of Calgary was a positive experience.

PhD Student (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsExcellent NMR facilities, helpful technical staff, glass blower, a few world class chemists, a few beautiful lab spaces.

ConsDepartment can be somewhat apathetic at times, labs are spread around the campus, so the community is a bit disjointed.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncentivize productive research.

    Great Environment

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlexible work schedule, option to work a 4 day compressed work week, if agreed with department head, time off for holidays, weekends, maternity and paternity leave, lots of support for non profit educational and health activities.

ConsInstitution does not pay bonuses. Nevertheless, its understandable given the limited revenue sources, and uncertainty regarding provincial revenues.

Advice to Senior ManagementOn-going job specific employee training should be emphasized

    Good employer for work-life balance

Specialist Advisor (Current Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

    ProsGood work-life balance
    Good coworkers
    Decent benefits

ConsLimited opportunity to take risks and perform tasks outside your designated job profile
Union rules limit innovation and are a detriment to work ethic (why work hard when you don't have to?)
    Painfully slow change process

Advice to Senior ManagementFind ways to reward people who go above and beyond their job profile, and who work hard for you. There are too many people who are just satisfied staying stagnant in their job skill set, and taking their scheduled 15-minute breaks and lunch breaks.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
