    Pros

You are able to build a strong career network if you do not burn any bridges since employees have a tendency of staying at UC for an incredibly long time due to the pension. If you have the right management team, your growth will be fostered, but ultimately, you will hit a wall in due to UC job politics.

    Cons

Working with people who have worked at UC for 15+ years, which can be good or bad since some of these employees stop caring about the quality of their work. Promotions and bonuses don't exist for staff and the school does not try to be competitive with staff salaries. Therefore, either you are working at the university because you truly love it or you are just working there because you know it is a steady paycheck. It is very hard to get fired even for incompetence.

    Advice to Management

Really management should try to a better job in the hiring process. It all boils down to knowing someone and if you are incompetent and know the right people, you will definitely land the job regardless of your skill set. The university has a habit of hiring people out of retirement who lack the necessary skill set to effectively contribute to the overall goals of the university.

    Pros

Good training, friendly atmosphere, organization tries to do the right thing

    Cons

Financial challenges, cost cutting, impersonal when things are not going well

    Advice to Management

You've gotten to where you are for any number of reasons. Remember that your people below you are what matters, and it reflects on you directly. Don't spend all of your time trying to look good to those above you, your actions and the success of your employees will say more than you ever could.

    Pros

It's a beautiful place, there are some amazing people, the benefits are good and if you work hard you stand out.

    Cons

Restructuring often without learning much from previous experience, you can get stuck with some awful managers or co-workers.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that who you are hiring for the upper management are qualified and understand what they are doing before making sweeping changes. Be careful with your hiring and promotional practices, for such a liberal, experimental campus, women and minorities who speak out are still passed up for promotion and derided, while their white male counterparts are promoted.

    Pros

As an alumna, I am proud to work for the world's greatest public education system. It is rewarding to know that my work is helping college students achieve their dreams!

    Cons

HUGE bureaucracy. Red tape to the extreme. Very disjointed and full of employees who are counting down to retirement who honestly should have been fired years ago. Low pay for staff.

    Advice to Management

Increase morale and try to incorporate more fun into the workplace. Also, be receptive to new ways to do things.

    Pros

Enlightening place to study for undergrad. I was a UGSI and it was an interesting experience.

    Cons

Tuition is rising. UGSIs do not get salaries but you get units (not as great..).

    Advice to Management

Lots of bureaucracy which doesn't make it easy to deal with regarding administrative issues.

    Pros

It's a top-notch research institution with beautiful weather, and San Diego is a great town if you love beaches and beer.

    Cons

    San Diego is wicked expensive
Graduate students are miserable (everywhere). Everyone in your lab will lie when you visit. Get them drunk and find out the truth
Job opportunities are pretty weak in academia in general, but UCSD is particular has a terrible career office compared to Harvard, Yale, Brown, NYU, Stanford, probably Berkeley.
Research institutions are about fame & grant-getters, not your petty career

    Advice to Management

Show compassion for the people you're supposed to train

    Pros

Working directly with the HR Analyst, gaining higher education knowledge, interacting with the student.

    Cons

Need major software updates to stay current and efficient with processing things in a timely manner and reduce a lot of unnecessary steps to achieve the same goal

    Advice to Management

Treat your assistants, coordinators and insubordinates as though you are a team instead of using scare tactics to persuade a better outcome.

    Pros

People are nice overall. Easy to leave work at work. Not too stressful.

    Cons

Typical state bureaucracy. Lots of rules and regulations, most of which are ignored. Duplicate work done at UCOP that is also done at each university. Can be very frustrating, especially if you have a strong work ethic.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of dead wood and duplication of effort. Run the business side of the university like a business. Unions have WAY too much input on how the business is run.

    Cons

Definitely depends upon department. Some faculty are great others not so much.

    Advice to Management

    Keep opportunities open
