Working for the world's greatest public university

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsAs an alumna, I am proud to work for the world's greatest public education system. It is rewarding to know that my work is helping college students achieve their dreams!

ConsHUGE bureaucracy. Red tape to the extreme. Very disjointed and full of employees who are counting down to retirement who honestly should have been fired years ago. Low pay for staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease morale and try to incorporate more fun into the workplace. Also, be receptive to new ways to do things.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Busy

    UGSI (Former Employee) Berkeley, CA

ProsEnlightening place to study for undergrad. I was a UGSI and it was an interesting experience.

ConsTuition is rising. UGSIs do not get salaries but you get units (not as great..).

Advice to Senior ManagementLots of bureaucracy which doesn't make it easy to deal with regarding administrative issues.

    Pleasant environment not enough

Doctoral Graduate Student Researcher (Current Employee) La Jolla, CA

ProsIt's a top-notch research institution with beautiful weather, and San Diego is a great town if you love beaches and beer.

    ConsSan Diego is wicked expensive
Graduate students are miserable (everywhere). Everyone in your lab will lie when you visit. Get them drunk and find out the truth
Job opportunities are pretty weak in academia in general, but UCSD is particular has a terrible career office compared to Harvard, Yale, Brown, NYU, Stanford, probably Berkeley.
Research institutions are about fame & grant-getters, not your petty career

Advice to Senior ManagementShow compassion for the people you're supposed to train

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Working in a diverse professional collegiate environment I learned a lot and liked the well rounded atmosphere.

Human Resources/Payroll Coordinator (Former Employee) Irvine, CA

ProsWorking directly with the HR Analyst, gaining higher education knowledge, interacting with the student.

ConsNeed major software updates to stay current and efficient with processing things in a timely manner and reduce a lot of unnecessary steps to achieve the same goal

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your assistants, coordinators and insubordinates as though you are a team instead of using scare tactics to persuade a better outcome.

    typical State Bureaucracy

Worker Bee (Current Employee) Oakland, CA

ProsPeople are nice overall. Easy to leave work at work. Not too stressful.

ConsTypical state bureaucracy. Lots of rules and regulations, most of which are ignored. Duplicate work done at UCOP that is also done at each university. Can be very frustrating, especially if you have a strong work ethic.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of dead wood and duplication of effort. Run the business side of the university like a business. Unions have WAY too much input on how the business is run.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Decent experience while working as a Temp in the Informatics Department.

Administrative Specialist (Former Employee) Westwood, CA

ProsI was able to work with magnificent doctors.

ConsWas held back from fully participating in projects due to 'Temp' status.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to include your 'Temp' in projects to make use of him/her as a resource while employed.

Excellent university, but value is decreasing.

Research Assistant (Current Employee) Santa Cruz, CA

ProsI had excellent opportunities as a research assistant. The facilities were reasonable and the faculty did their jobs. Beautiful campus. I was very pleased with family student housing for my wife and I.

ConsTuitions continues to increase sharply without providing any additional value. There are some resource constraints and TAs / faculty don't have enough time for individualized attention of undergrads due to large class sizes.

Advice to Senior ManagementReevaluate policies on executive compensation. I don't believe the current compensation is well-earned.
