Pros – In this backward, boring, conservative Midwest city, higher education provides a little refreshing air to breath. This is a place with culture, activities, world class architecture, and smart people. Most people, no matter faculty or staff, are highly educated and understand the importance of diversity, education, caring of humanity and environment, and globalization. This review is particularly from the standpoint of a professional staff. Pros: great fringe benefits on some areas.
Cons – For staff, it lacks any development strategy. You are hired, and you are expected to work, and work, and maybe retire before the job is eliminated, or you die. Nobody cares about if you are productive or not, because when there is budget cut, professional staff's salaries and positions are first to go since they are not represented by any collective bargaining power, not like faculty and nurses. Morale among young professionals is very low because senior management doesn't care. Low salary compared to industry. You have to look for yourself. Not an ideal place to work for aspiring young professionals. In the past 10 years, most staff had two or at most three meager salary increase (1-3%) while the benefits are shrinking year by year. Most staff see actual income shrunk year by year. That is the work place of UC for staff in a nutshell.
Advice to Senior Management – Treat professional staff equally important as faculty if you think the professional staff are assets. If you keep the mentality that staff are non-productive expenses, you will have a malfunctioning campus, for sure. Without the staff's hard work, there is no university, period. Without staff, the professors at most will be private tutors.

Current Employee – been working at University of Cincinnati full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Facilities are clean and professional
Faculty are world-class
Cincinnati is an inexpensive place to live
Numerous fields of core research
Cons – Diminishing higher education funding is offset by increased student fees
Budgetary cost-cutting involved combining multiple departments into large programs with constantly changing, underpopulated, administrative staff
Advice to Senior Management – When reasonable, students should be 'grandfathered' into the terms agreed upon during acceptance into program. Dramatic increases in grant-derived student support should be negotiated directly with faculty, as it puts students in an awkward position to broker the additional burden.

Current Employee – been working at University of Cincinnati part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great mix of people all around you. Lots of people with a lifetime of experience behind them, so lots to learn, if you are open to it.
Cons – There are many administrators with large egos and personal ambitions, as long as you do not end up working under them or near them, you should be alright. Good news is that the kind and inspiring people far outnumber the crazy ones.
Advice to Senior Management – Spend some time in the real world and get out of your academic bubble once in a while, you may learn something useful. Also tame your ego and remember its not about you, its about education and inspiration.

Former Employee – worked at University of Cincinnati as a contractor for more than a year
Pros – There are a ton of opportunities outside of teaching at this very large employer. It can be very refreshing to spend your days in a modern educational environment.
Cons – Fairly low pay scale all around, and offices are run-of-the-mill. No emphasis on employee satisfaction, and technology is lackluster.

Pros – Very smart students. They all have a vested interest to succeed. Colleagues are very interesting and fun to collaborate with.
Cons – Long hours, long days. Expect to work late every night, and weekends. It is very hard to juggle education, research, and service in a regular week. Vacations are used to catch up on work. Expect to work very very hard.

Pros – The benefits for the University of Cincinnati are amazing. Medical, Dental, and Vision is just OK. The 401K is the best my dad has ever seen and he works in stock and finance. You put in 10% and the University matches and then puts in an additional 3.5%, it is truly fantastic.
Cons – Oh downsides where do I start:
I have been working for the University of Cincinnati for over 3 years now and I thought working at a big University where the research is fantastic and they have all of the 'best' staff and faculty, was a good thing...no I was wrong. Bigger is not better, you get lost in the ocean of people that work here. And in some positions you are just a number or another Research Associate. I work with a lady that has a Bachelors and Masters degree yet she has worked here for 10 years and she has never gotten a raise, her title has never been changed to associate her with long standing status at the University.
If you ever have worked in research you know that you are a slave to your PI, and this University is no different. You can work 5-7 years on a project and still have to beg your PI to get it published before your research gets 'scooped' and pray that in the next 6-8 months after your paper finally gets published that you have some shot in h*ll that a company or another University just may want you.
Some words of advice; if you are applying ask people outside of the department that you are applying for to get there true opinion of what they think about the University. If you never ask you never know what outsiders really think about your boss or soon to be boss. Please do your research before coming, because once you are in, it is really hard to get out.
Advice to Senior Management – I really wish that management would actually spend some time down with the 'little people' before they make budgets or lay off people. Then they might see what they truly are effecting. Because here is no different, please that make decision calls almost 99% of the time they have no directly experience with what they are managing.

Current Employee – been working at University of Cincinnati
Pros – It's a good work environment with exposure for different activities and jobs in the campus. The job variety ranges from managerial to technical
Cons – The system at the University is sometimes a little rigid. Also, the Career Development Fairs are not really focused on international students.

Current Employee – been working at University of Cincinnati
Pros – Flexibility is excellent. The academic environment is superb. The campus is beautiful. There are benefits aside from pay, like the ability to take classes in addition to teaching them.
Cons – The pay for adjunct faculty is very low. The onboarding process was poor and there was little support to get acclimated to the environment.
Advice to Senior Management – Assign mentors and support to your faculty in order to ensure they acclimate successfully to the university. Pay your adjunct faculty better and they will stick around.
