Former Employee – worked at University of Hawai'i part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Nice environment - living in Hawaii
Aloha spirit - people are nice
Urban campus - and close to beaches
Cons – Static - people are taking their time, and sometimes don't work efficiently
Poor pay compared to other places
Travel to anywhere else costly and time-consuming
Advice to Senior Management – UH is probably a

Current Employee – been working at University of Hawai'i full-time for more than a year
Pros – Most colleagues are dedicated and are trying their best. Friendly and helpful culture. Many great students with good work ethic and dedication. Culture supports work-life balance and family life. Many problems with leadership and bureaucracy, but many do feel that things are getting better. Many talented and dedicated faculty.
Cons – Mysterious bureaucracy that leads to inexplicable delays. Lack of transparency and accountability. Very poor compensation in comparison to peer institutions and given extremely high cost of living. Embarassing facilities. Lack of public support for the university outside of athletics. Siege mentality of many faculty and staff.
Advice to Senior Management – More transparency about how the university works. Direct answers from leadership about problems and challenges instead of just highlighting achievements. Recognize and reward employees who excel. Do a better job of raising funds from donors and building community relationships. Pay faculty salaries competitive with other universities that will allow them to live in such an expensive city.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Pros – You live in Honolulu, heaven on earth.

Current Employee – been working at University of Hawai'i part-time for more than a year
Pros – Outstanding faculty, opportunities to help students achieve their goals, teaching assistantships absolutely essential to funding graduate education
Cons – Funding is drying up quickly in several departments and opportunities to be hired as a teaching or research assistant are disappearing fast
Advice to Senior Management – Rein in some of the most obvious spending mistakes (upper administration, football coach, etc...) and concentrate on funding the more neglected departments

Former Employee – worked at University of Hawai'i
Pros – The ppl are very nice here. Campus is Very beautiful, especially the trees. bus is convenient to and from the campus and it is free with Id. Dining option on campus is great, lots of Asian food.
Cons – buildings are ugly. Parking is expensive and far from school buildings. Library has poor access to some key journals for research. Gym is small, swimming pool opens to public for very short time per day. Administration is inefficient
Advice to Senior Management – Improve the administration and stop cutting staffs. We need them to keep the department running? A department needs at least one secretary to deal with student documents, etc.

Current Employee – been working at University of Hawai'i
Pros – The people are great, I really enjoy teaching the students.
Cons – Very low pay for TA's 1,290/mo + tuition waiver. This is so low that graduate students qualify for food stamps. However, by law graduate students are the one group of people that is prohibited from receiving food stamps even if they qualify.
Advice to Senior Management – The management should raise the TA salary once the state legislature stops cutting the funding for the University of Hawaii in half.

Former Employee – worked at University of Hawai'i
Pros – Guaranteed 4% salary raises about 2x's a year. Plus, you get a lot of holidays off. For the most part, people are friendly. But the office I worked in, everyone was there based on who they knew, not what. So there were a lot of unqualified people doing jobs they had no experience in, which, I think, is part of the reason it takes so long to do anything-- processing paperwork, helping students, updating facilities, etc.
Cons – No accountability. People push papers to make it appear they are working, so everything moves extremely slooooww in the entire system. Pople are happy to just move up the 'steps' with senority, but not learn new skills.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire people who actually know how to do the job and support them in training and advancement.
