Former Employee – worked at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Pros – Flexibility, great campus life, rapport with students, salary low but is still very livable for the affordable Champaign area, leaves sufficient free time to work on research and classwork.
Cons – Many academic positions are temporary, town is VERY small with little going on, sometimes responsible for high number of students so grading can be burdensome.

Current Employee – been working at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Pros – This place has enough research opportunity with funding and never worry about tuition payment.
Cons – The atomsphere is somewhat geeky and people need to find their own way to relax. The climate of Champaign is very bad.

Current Employee – been working at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – The paid is quite ok given the low housing cost in the city. The good CS department and the supercomputing facilities in the campus will greatly benefit theoretical research demanding heavy computation. Good inter-departmental collaboration.
Cons – Kind of boring city. The school seems fail to keep good professors/researchers lately. Cold and fluctuating weather.

Current Employee – been working at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign part-time for less than a year
Pros – It was a very good experience because the students were very willing to learn and they did not ask for help much
Cons – The pay is on the low side for being a teaching assistant and sometimes the hours are not optimal
Advice to Senior Management – None

Current Employee – been working at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign part-time for more than a year
Pros – I enjoyed my job, and the pepple I worked with. The math department, unlike some departments, has a positive environment for its employees. I also worked IT for the LAS department, and it was OK. If you work in a non-administrative position, the atmosphere is good.
Cons – As with any public institution, it alway feels as if the University is deteriorating. Often times there is too much work and not enough time. And the pay is not stellar, but you can consistently make as much or more than your peers in other fields.
Advice to Senior Management – Find more corporate donations, the school is paying for too much research that it doesn't reap the benefits of alone.

Current Employee – been working at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign part-time for more than 3 years
Pros – -compensation in Crop Sciences was
-assistantship was voluntary, so I didn't have to rely on it, which arguably raises the quality of teaching
-opportunity to directly teach students, not just grade
-being an international student did not slow things down (working actually had the benefit of providing me with a SSN, non-resident tax treaty benefits)
Cons – -It's a teaching assistantship. Don't expect to get that much.
-grading sucks
