    Good Company

    Administrative Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Lexington, KY

ProsJob Security - As long as you do your work.
One of the better retirement in Lexington.
Now family members are able to take advantage of the educational benefits that previously were only for employees use.

ConsUpper Administration is very heavy. If more time and money was spent on the education of the students and support staff, it would be a much better place to work.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Contract Chaplain

    Contract Chaplain (Former Employee)
    Lexington, KY

ProsUniversity of Kentucky offers great benefits such as health and life insurance and access to their health care provider network. Also the Lexington community offers discounts to UK employees and faculty and the university is seen as a contributing and positive presence in the city. UK also offers good working conditions and I worked with a set of outstanding colleagues who supported me in my position.

ConsThe drawbacks to this position were the limited contract period and the lack of job security for follow on contracts.

Part time administrative assistant work at a research center was enjoyable and pay was fine

    Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
    Lexington, KY

ProsI enjoyed the work and community at the research center. Working for UK builds instant connection with people in Lexington, since the whole region really identifies with the university and everyone follows the basketball team! :) I had great coworkers, Lexington is a lovely city, and the campus is very pleasant. It was great to learn more about the work the university sponsored through grants and other funding and to interact with the graduate student and research community.

ConsIt was challenging navigating the larger university policies. It's a really big organization and it was easy to feel lost within the bigger picture.

    Pretty nice place to work

    Laboratory Manager (Current Employee)
    Lexington-Fayette, KY

    ProsVery flexible hours
    Very friendly co-workers
    Low-stress environment
They pay for most if not all of your classes should you choose to take them
    Inexpensive and comprehensive health insurance

    ConsNot very good pay
At least in my position, no room for advancement unless I want to get a graduate or doctors degree.

Great place to work, but be prepared for continual frustrations.

IS Technical Support Specialist III (Current Employee)
    Lexington-Fayette, KY

ProsGenerous benefits package, good health care options via the University's Medical Center

ConsProcesses are very very difficult to alter. In general, people conflate the processes they use and their job as a whole (i.e. "my job is to sort through this paper bill to search for mistakes", as opposed to "my job is to ensure that the monthly billing process is accurate.") which leads to refusals to change business processes.

VERY difficult to move up the ladder. Promotions aren't common, and typically only happen when a person moves away from their current department into a higher position.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe flexible when it comes to change. Encourage employees to find new solutions to existing problems, and to use different processes to streamline day to day operations.

It was an awesome place, but it really depends on which department you are in, Uni of KY is too big for me to say!

    Assessment Specialist (Former Employee)
    Lexington-Fayette, KY

ProsGreat leadership working with the VP and others in this department

ConsNot enough opportunity for training, did not have an immediate supervisor (did not hire due to freeze)

    UK review from staff perspective

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Lexington-Fayette, KY

ProsThey match retirement 200% and have really great healthcare benefits (except you are limited to UK doctors)

ConsI've been here five years and we've only received raises once. Also, you have to pay $31 a month to park where you work!

Easy job that worked well around my class schedule.

    Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
    Lexington-Fayette, KY

ProsAble to make my own schedule/amount of hours I wanted to work. A lot of down time that allowed me to do homework and study.

ConsSometimes there was lots to do but other times there wasn't much so just had to be ready for whatever type of day it was.
