  1. UK is a pretty decent place to work, but it depends mostly on who you know vs what you know. No raises for many years.

    Pros

Great benefits, some good people. The retirement plan is awesome, health insurance is ok. I had HMO and did not have any real complaints.

    Cons

Some of the higher paid doctors and most faculty can be insufferable. There is certainly a bit of snobbery on campus. Did not get many raises, since there was a freeze while I was there.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the micro-managing. There needs to be better communication between levels and departments. Give incentives for retention.

    Pros

Good professors, a welcoming community, 2 courses per semester, and $15,000 a year (as of 2015) graduate stipend.

    Cons

Weak in analytic philosophy (though getting better) and medieval philosophy. So-so in ethics but strong in continental, Kant, Marx, and Hegel.

    Advice to Management

Keep course loads back to 2/1 with an option to be a grader each year.

    Pros

There are some great PIs to work for, as well as the opportunity to learn many techniques on up-to-date equipment. Many fellowships available from the University.

    Cons

The pay is low and the hours are long. The worst is during the first two years where you will be taking classes and attending to TA duties while trying to accomplish research in the lab.

    Advice to Management

    Increase the TA stipend

    Pros

Good place to work and get your degree at. A lot of opportunity to grow as a researcher. Advisors are usually very supportive of your ideas and encourage independent thinking.

    Cons

Work load could be attimes alot and there is not enough time to pursue your hobbies. However, if you like what you do it helps to an extent.

    Pros

Job Security. Once hired, you can work at UK for the rest of your life if you want. Even if you're lazy. (As long as you don't screw up severely)

    Cons

Things move at a snail pace all over the organization. Salary inequality is severe. Your supervisors make 3-4x your salary without producing 3-4x your knowledge or work, simply because they have friends in the right places and/or have been at the organization a long time.

    Advice to Management

When your subordinates tell you they feel they are underpaid, don't tell them "there's just no money for raises". Especially since it is a public University and everybody's salary is public information. We can see that you get massive raises every year even though there's "no money". (This isn't targeted to one person, this is generic. It happens all over the campus in the management side of things)
