  1. Lovely environment (worked at Weetwood sports facilities). Great work colleagues let down by senior management.

    Pros

Excellent facilities, constantly being developed and improved.

    Cons

If you like hockey, even better play or coach the sport you will be in demand and progress in work here. However don't expect a clear and transparent job pathway, Hockey players appear to be head hunted and given jobs. The facilities manager (although competent and efficient) seems to use his budget as a recruitment tool, to progress his own hobby.

    Advice to Management

Get to grips with the recruitment and personal opportunities at Weetwood. Scrutinise the accounts! Is this a University to support its current students or past students and weekend hockey? Surely BUCS on a wednesday is where money should be invested and financial support should not go to outside sports clubs.

  2. The Strategy is "Increasing knowledge and opportunity" BUT the reality is admin gets in the way

    Pros

Great if you like using lots of different admin IT systems, and/or like lots of admin, rather than teaching and research!

    Cons

Academic staff have LOTS of online paperwork. Every Intranet admin function uses a different IT system withn a different interface: undergrad teaching admin has VLE, Student turoring has "Leeds for Life", Research Postgrad admin has PDR, Research project management has KRISTAL and incomprehensible Excel spreadsheets, Research proposal admin has J-eS, Research publications has Symplectic, HR has a weird "psychadelic trip" website I cannot fathom, ... I keep asking for plain text which I can use without mouse and complex navigation, but everyone just passes the buck and says it's IT...

    Advice to Management

The University website is a mess! In particular the Intranet is designed for Admin staff, but not for academic end-users. Every Admin IT interface must have a mouse-free plain text alternative, this will streamline academic staff use of disparate Admin websites and online admin processes. This will increase knowledge and opportunity! (Leeds University supposed strategy)

    Pros

Good holidays Good atmosphere on campus Some very nice scenery and interesting buildings Interest in the environment, ethical practices (Student Union)

    Cons

Very hierarchical Support staff not given opportunity to develop or progress Bullying and unfair treatment quite rife

    Advice to Management

We are all cogs that make this wheel work. Treat people on all levels with equal respect and dignity

    Pros

Very flexible re. work balance. Lectures are not really expected to be there at their offices other than when teaching. If they can find some conference or research project, then they can actually live hundreds of miles away and show up once a month.

    Cons

Clogged by paperwork. This is not an innovative or creative place. This is a bureaucracy. Everything done in here is about making sure the Uni is not sued. Staff are afraid of students and students show little interest in staff. Research is about publications, not about knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Get a vision that is inspirational. More publications, more students and survival is not a vision. It is a cop out.
