Working for residential life puts you at the forefront for issues, yet you receive no support from the university.

Resident Assistant (Current Employee)
Amherst, MA

I have been working at University of Massachusetts part-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Create new contacts
-Resume builder
-Good references

Cons-Not supportive of employees
-If anything goes wrong, you are on your own
-Low pay/High expectations
-Expected to do the bidding of higher-ups without question or input
-Higher-ups will not take your opinions into account

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management should revise their bureaucratic policies to create an opening for employee input. The advice of the individuals who work with the students and see the results of implemented policies is invaluable. This is not recognized, but should be.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Cockroaches and Rampant Harassment.

I have been working at University of Massachusetts full-time for more than 3 years

ProsIf you can get a benefited position you'll be able to enjoy free classes, free tuition, and a stable job.

ConsThe pay isn't competitive, little room for advancement, poor management that chooses to ignore; harassment claims, pest control, food safety issues, and in general good business practices. If you work here find a lawyer, you'll find laws being broken constantly so that upper management can cut corners. It took almost 5 weeks for my first paycheck, and I was lucky, some of my colleagues have to wait 2 months for their first checks because of a massive bureaucracy.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't text someone at 1am to come in for 7am the same day then get pissed off and threaten their job when they say no. Also, don't say "I got your back," to someone who was just seen grabbing a clearly upset 16 year old employee's ass. And the list goes on and on.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsDiverse, great location on the water.

ConsLimited range of talent, conformity is pervasive, the top level of the organization is weak and ineffective, easy to reach but slow to act.

Advice to Senior ManagementPick up the slack. Rather than creating programs to develop inadequacy into mediocrity, create ones for empowering the potentially great to become better.
