    Pros

Salary, benefits and beautiful campus. President Shalala is friendly and very knowledgeable. I enjoyed my brief encounters with her.

    Cons

Upper management is lacking in supervisory skills. Interoffice communication very poor. Upper management attended Culture Shaping Workshops. This needs to be continually followed up on as some upper management do not take this training seriously.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better. Don't assume everyone is on the same page. Perhaps bi-weekly meetings?

    Pros

The culture in the lab was extremely laid back and the schedule was very flexible. You could take a day off whenever you needed.

    Cons

Machines would break down causing you to rerun samples over and over. Project goals would change that would benefit some but leave others with barely any work hours for a whole semester.

Former Employee - Research Assistant and Postdoctoral in Miami, FL

    Pros

Excellent Faculty, good Health Care Benefits, good work-life balance possible

    Cons

resistance to change, often unfriendly (rude) environment, often slow regulatory/legal process, often low salaries, often no room to grow/get promoted, often too high workload per individual in clinical research, expensive parking ($50-70 per month), expensive and not-world class quality daycare on campus (Dominion tower), no 401K during the first year of employment, often layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider applying more positive reinforcement to motivate employees and adding more benefits (lost after 2009-2010). Consider expediting legal/regulatory processes in clinical research and legal department.

I have learned a lot there but this is not that place to stay if you want to experience any growth in 3-5 years.

    Pros

Relatively slow environment with lots of downtime; good work-life balance; good tuition remission benefits for undergraduate degrees

    Cons

Low salaries when compared to the Corporate environment, most staff have been there 10-30 years so there is little incentive and lots of resistance to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good place to work but many times progress gets bogged down in red tape or people unwilling to make a decision which could make them look bad. There are no repercussions for poor service because most of the time, that is the best you can get at that specific salary range.

    Pros

The UM is a reputable institution and has a beautiful campus.

    Cons

However, there is no opportunity for professional growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The UM should assign leaders who care about their employees growth and advancement if they want the growth and advancement of their institution.

    Pros

A few great professors, beautiful campus. College of Engineering has very smart students and professors.

    Cons

The coursework, degree direction and choices of classes are very bureaucratically organized, not too much freedom.
Also, some class topics are a little out of date.
