Former Employee - Student Custodian in Missoula, MT

I worked at University of Montana part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

For my student custodial job, my supervisor made coming to work enjoyable, there was opportunity to pick up extra hours regularly and my coworkers were great!

    Cons

Not a lot of hours. You are looking at few hours a week though. 3.5 hours a way and 5 days a week is what I worked. Monday- Thursday was 8:00pm to 11:30pm and Friday was 4:30-8pm. This did constrain the classes I could take a little bit, as working a later shift will screw with your sleeping schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An increase in pay for the student workers who live off campus would be beneficial. Missoula is an expensive town and pulling in $400 a month makes getting by really tough. More hours or an increase in pay would be great.

    Pros

Incredible autonomy is given when interacting with and helping the student customers of this business. These interactions are the most rewarding and educational experiences at this business.

    Cons

With autonomy comes responsibility, and oversight is sometimes lacking. Employees are trained in policies related to their work, but they must ensure that they are followed.

I have been working at University of Montana full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great medical benefits, many training opportunities, flexible schedules, in-state tuition waiver, paid holidays, retirement fund, lovely work environment.

    Cons

Pay is not ideal in the low teens / hour, however when all the pros are taken advantage of (i.e. the savings on education, medical benefits, training opportunities, as well as the retirement fund matched by employer) one ends up investing in their future more so than many other employment opportunities in Missoula.

I have been working at University of Montana

    Pros

You are only limited by your own creativity. KBGA is an integral part of the community and opens doors to meeting many influential people in Missoula. High respect for people that work at KBGA. See projects completed. team-oriented. great perks to compensate for low pay including coffee at work, and show tickets.

    Cons

low-pay. Long hours. Many events to attend that aren't paid. yearly managerial turn-over. some people that are hired have zero experience so learning curve is high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management changes every year, so this is a hard question to complete. Possible answer may be: have strategic goals set out every year that must be met beyond fundraising events.
