Quit hiring the golfer buddies' kids and put managers in who know how to manage and act civily to employees

UNLV - Watch out for the management

I have been working at University of Nevada Las Vegas

    Pros

Unlv offers some great benefits. From reduced cost classes to a healthy matching to a very diverse 401k plan (you can choose offerings from 3 different investment houses) the salary alone doesn't truly show just what all you are getting. Some departments have great cohesiveness and treat each other well and respectfully. The newer buildings on campus are impressive to look at and have amenities in them that are pretty amazing. To add to all this you are in Vegas and there is never a loss for things to do and see - the university occasionally has promotions where employees get in to shows and events for a reduced rate.

    Cons

There seems to be a distinct disconnect between senior management and the actual employees. Some departments seem to not want to even communicate with each other, while other departments I have been told strictly not to speak with. No true review is given to management so long as they are producing money for the university so there are some still in top positions even though their staff practically hates them. Some faculty are similar in regards to the fact all of their students year after year give them poor reviews yet they still continue to have jobs at UNLV. The recent financial situation has put major strains on the university yet while some departments thrive they do not want to share that money even though there is plenty and from sharing they would have significant improvements to education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to lighten up and focus on the students more than the bottom line. My unit is treated like we are children by management - being constantly watched and monitored for our daily activities even though production seems to be at an all time high. There seems to be a culture among management that every dollar is what counts and they need to remember they are at an institute of higher learning and you are doing your job for the students.
