    Pros

As a student you are able to receive many discounts around chapel hill for food and lodging. In addition there are many work related opportunties available on campus for students.

    Cons

The salaries for students do not increase over the course of your graduate career.

I have been working at University of North Carolina full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great location, relatively good benefits, good public transportation system, access to state employees credit union, normal NIH postdoc salary, but lower cost of living than other places in the country

    Cons

Some people have the typical state-employee mentality, just working enough to get retirement, sometimes one has to create work-arounds or be creative to get things accomplished within the system

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

reward people who make exceptional contributions, not those who have the typical state-employee mentality

I have been working at University of North Carolina part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Your experience depends on the team of people you're working with, but I have been lucky. The PI I was working with gave me a great deal of atonomony and has a great team of motivated smart people working for her. I have had the opportunity to work on several of the PIs studies, and have learned so much about the world clinical/social research. Overall it's been a fantastic job.

    Cons

People generally stay in the UNC system for too long, and become apathetic or negative. In reasearch there are lots of ebs and flows to the work, so there are periods where there is very little to do. There is also little room for growth unless you have a PhD.

I worked at University of North Carolina part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Somewhat laid back, they will work with your class schedule to get you what hours you want. Good IT support experience. Can learn a lot about software, hardware and audiovisual support here.

    Cons

As a student worker, you are limited to a maximum of 20 hours during the semester. Also, the student position got paid very little but I believe that is changing.

I have been working at University of North Carolina full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, great fellow faculty, wonderful students.

    Cons

Tend to promote outstanding academics who are clueless with how to lead, manage and serve as the administrator for a program. Another real threat to this great university is a clueless legislature who seem to be singularly focused on gutting the essential funding to primary, secondary and higher education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Solicit input from your faculty and pay attention to the input.

    Pros

Overall, this is a great Univeristy to work for. It shows great appreciation for its employees.

    Cons

My department's environment was great however, there was no potential to grow within that particulat environment. Everyone seems stuck in their current role.
