It is a great organisation and you can work with capable and dedicated people, but there are many frustrations.

ProsMost of the people I work with are genuinely committed to Higher Education, the University, and working well with their team and are proud to work here.

ConsPay is generally very good but reward for stronger performers is not great which is demotivating, nor is general support for staff good, and processes and systems are more a hinderance than a help, and it can take a lot of perseverance to get through them - though things are improving. Senior management aims to listens, but seem as constrained as anyone else in actually changing things for the better, and get it wrong as often as they get it right, and seem to be fairly inexperienced for the level of responsibility they are given.

Advice to Senior ManagementAcknowledge that just because you hold a more senior position does not mean you have a better solution to whatever the problem or challenge is.

ProsExcellent Campus, good facilities, lots of extra-curicular activities. If you are willing to make the effort you will find a whole host of activities to keep you entertained.

ConsLack of communication within the faculty. Can be frustrating to get things done in a prompt manner. It has improved in recent years.

Interesting, can be demotivating at times but never boring.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    Prosinternational workplace, diversity in people.

Consno major drawbacks except very poor planning in providing facilities to staff and students in car parking.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior/Top mgmt needs to make time and effort to solicit feedback from all staff directly and not via middle management to collect and compile. Trim down the bureaucracy, too many directors and deputy directors for academics and held by the same people.

Nottingham University - a reasonable employer with reasonable benefits

Teaching & Student Support Officer (Current Employee)
    Nottingham, England (UK)

ProsCareer structure, personal development, work-life balance

ConsDifficult to move up the career structure; they like to shove your pay up the scale to the top, and then leave it there so you don't receive any increase year-on-year afterwards; often afraid to shed the deadwood and keeps people who shouldn't really be in a job.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe realistic; don't be so politically correct.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Nottingham, England (UK)

Prosreally nice campus, good facilities etc for sport and recreation. management was okay, and the students i worked with were excellent.

Consmanagement did not value my job. some of the students did not show any interest in turning up for lectures.

Advice to Senior Managementvalue the support staff - the university is not going to be able to run without those people in the background.
