I worked at University of Nottingham part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The training was paid and thorough enough for the job. The pay itself was excellent for the work we were doing. I learnt a lot of skills there.

    Cons

The job itself was not my kind of thing so I didn't enjoy myself - but that may have just been my own personal taste. I know others did enjoy it.

    Pros

This company has a good reputation and is a great place to work. I would happily advise any of my friends to work at this company.

    Cons

Certain red tape is unavoidable in this company. They need to take into account student views if they want to really show that this is a part of their goal.

It is a great organisation and you can work with capable and dedicated people, but there are many frustrations.

I have been working at University of Nottingham full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Most of the people I work with are genuinely committed to Higher Education, the University, and working well with their team and are proud to work here.

    Cons

Pay is generally very good but reward for stronger performers is not great which is demotivating, nor is general support for staff good, and processes and systems are more a hinderance than a help, and it can take a lot of perseverance to get through them - though things are improving. Senior management aims to listens, but seem as constrained as anyone else in actually changing things for the better, and get it wrong as often as they get it right, and seem to be fairly inexperienced for the level of responsibility they are given.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge that just because you hold a more senior position does not mean you have a better solution to whatever the problem or challenge is.

    Pros

Excellent Campus, good facilities, lots of extra-curicular activities. If you are willing to make the effort you will find a whole host of activities to keep you entertained.

    Cons

Lack of communication within the faculty. Can be frustrating to get things done in a prompt manner. It has improved in recent years.

I have been working at University of Nottingham full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    international workplace, diversity in people.

    Cons

no major drawbacks except very poor planning in providing facilities to staff and students in car parking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior/Top mgmt needs to make time and effort to solicit feedback from all staff directly and not via middle management to collect and compile. Trim down the bureaucracy, too many directors and deputy directors for academics and held by the same people.
