I have been working at University of Nottingham part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flexible, work offered on a "sign up if you're available" basis to work around studies and lecture commitments.

Managers/full-time staff very friendly and accommodating.

You get to meet and work with a wide variety of people from many different places.

    Cons

You'll sometimes find yourself waiting around, often I felt shift start times were too early compared to when events would actually be taking place. You may have everything setup with an hour to kill before visitors even started turning up.

  7. One of the best universities

    Pros

Good part time pay for a student job and can fit it around academic commitments. While at university this job gave some work experience to put on the CV for future employers.

    Cons

There are always events going on at the uni but the irregularity of the work can mean some weeks without work.

    Advice to Management

There is not much in the way of management as it is a part time uni job.

  9. A fantastic campus with fantastic staff but let down by continued provision of less than excellent teaching facilities.

    Pros

The grounds are amazing, I live on campus and it is a delight to watch the colours change with the seasons, they are so well managed.
The staff are from all over the world so although the university is in regional uk ( and has all the benefits of that such as proximity to Peak District, economical living expenses) it also has a connectivity to the world.

    Cons

The buildings are not the best they can be. Estates prefers to keep things to a price as opposed to the best venue for teaching which is a pity as this campus could be the best in the uk but it isn't because of the wasted opportunities for the facilities. I teach in rooms that students cannot hear properly, the problems were highlighted prior to construction but nothing was done to change this and nothing has been done since. It is the key factor to reducing the students experience in my opinion.

    Advice to Management

Make quality teaching spaces a priority not the budget, it is a false economy to build bad teaching spaces as it lowers student experience and hence league tables.

Give students the permanent desk spaces that would make this the best university. The university has the opportunity as it has the space unlike others, so to not make the most of the space in a facility provision sense is simply bad business. Sure the campus grounds are beautiful but we are a place of teaching first and the buildings are currently letting the whole place down in terms of quality and amount of space available.

    Pros

Strong research and teaching environments and high-quality students.

    Cons

Occasional interference in academic reserach/teaching by management rulings.

    Advice to Management

Leadership is fine, as long as it does not lead to interference with academic work. Also, while getting positive student ratings are important, it is not always about giving students what they want, but rather about providing them with what they need.

Some high-level academic staff need to be convinced to contribute more extensively to teaching.
