ProsThere are some really great people in the department and top-notch research is conducted. Great work environment.

ConsHR and university administration is a complete mess. Issues include paperwork that goes missing or is not processed on time, people not getting paid on time due to admin errors. Also, 0 benefits for post-docs. You get your salary through your prof, and that's it - the university doesn't give you anything. You won't be in either the staff or student's union, so you better have private coverage.

Advice to Senior ManagementFix the administration at the faculty and higher level.

    not bad

Research Assistant (Former Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsCompensation, diversity and benefits. Equipment is new and not an issue. Working hours are flexible and the staff re very helpful.

Consvery stressful and unprofessional supervisor, had many problems with him. Some of my colleagues chose to give up and leave, those who stayed regret it!

Advice to Senior Managementkeep an eye on supervisors and their behavior towards the students !

    Research assistant

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe management team and administrative staff are all very nice. However, for the research assistant job, the experience really depends on your thesis supervisor. Some professors are really helpful and understanding.
It gives you valuable experience. If you only take courses, it is difficult to find a good job after graduation.

ConsFor master's student, course-based usually takes less time than thesis-based. We have to stay in lab during summer. Some professors will not allow students to get an internship. If you still want an internship, it may takes you at least 2.5-3 years to graduate.
In my opinion, internship experience is more important for finding jobs than RA.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement is fine. It is difficult to take actions to some terrible professors.

    Part TIme Professor

Professor (Current Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsGood facilities for teaching, including WiFI and wired classroom. Good student body, that seems engaged.

ConsThe administration seems to take professors, especially part-time professors for granted. They expect the part-time professors to do much organization and scheduling and do not seem to respect that these individuals have full-time jobs. As a whole, the administration seems to favour French as the language of choice so English speaking profs seem at a disadvantage. The reliance on web based email is also frustrating.

    Satisfactory at Best

Assistant Professor (Current Employee) Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsCentrally located, Decent physical facilities, opportunity to learn English or French as a second language

ConsBiligualism acts as an obstacle for professional growth. Most gatekeeper staff is French and despite their ability to help everyone, response time is slower if you can't communicate with them in French.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider the need for bilingualism on a case-by-case basis.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
