I worked at University of Ottawa

    Pros

location, accessibility are two important elements to the favor of the university as a workplace. there are so many facilities on campus to the benefit of the staff and students

    Cons

you need to be bilingual for most jobs, it would be have been much better if all posted jobs would be open to external candidates, not just internal ones

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

people need to be able to access more facilities on their time off, that should be extended too

I have been working at University of Ottawa full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are some really great people in the department and top-notch research is conducted. Great work environment.

    Cons

HR and university administration is a complete mess. Issues include paperwork that goes missing or is not processed on time, people not getting paid on time due to admin errors. Also, 0 benefits for post-docs. You get your salary through your prof, and that's it - the university doesn't give you anything. You won't be in either the staff or student's union, so you better have private coverage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the administration at the faculty and higher level.

    Pros

Compensation, diversity and benefits. Equipment is new and not an issue. Working hours are flexible and the staff re very helpful.

    Research assistant

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at University of Ottawa

    Pros

The management team and administrative staff are all very nice. However, for the research assistant job, the experience really depends on your thesis supervisor. Some professors are really helpful and understanding.
It gives you valuable experience. If you only take courses, it is difficult to find a good job after graduation.

    Cons

For master's student, course-based usually takes less time than thesis-based. We have to stay in lab during summer. Some professors will not allow students to get an internship. If you still want an internship, it may takes you at least 2.5-3 years to graduate.
In my opinion, internship experience is more important for finding jobs than RA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is fine. It is difficult to take actions to some terrible professors.
