  1.

    Friendly place

    Pros

The maths department has a collegial and friendly atmosphere and is supportive of its post-docs. The campus is lovely, and Reading is a nice place to live.

    Cons

Don't really have much bad to say. The building is a bit old and tatty, and Reading is a bit too far away from London. There's a lot of variation in research quality between departments, so do your homework.

  2.

A place where people are passionate and committed but poorly served by the low level of leadership and management.

    Pros

Great location; pleasant, loyal and able colleagues.

    Cons

Sadly and institution long past its prime and living on a (declining) reputation. The take over by University of Reading has not worked due to 1) no strategy for combining the best of both places and 2) very poor HR decisions (wiping out all the small, but important staff legacy working conditions at Henley) 3) absent or incompetent management/leadership skills. A case of 'physician heal thyself'!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start practising what (your programmes) preach - consult your staff and develop a strategy that inspires and makes sense; put 100% more effort into coaching and bringing together staff/teams; stop wasting time on trying to win business which has more to do with vanity than business sense

  3.

    Interesting and laid back

    Pros

    Educational environment
Flexible but at the same time strict
Reliable job that will not let anyone down
Location is nice and close to London

    Cons

Repetitive routines that are too repetitive and finally it is a real pain to work with all the procedures before doing anything

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make work more fun a place where everyone can enjoy and feel like they're working not because they're looking forward to the final salary but because they're doing something challenging
