    Much like other universities

    PhD Student (Current Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsSolid university with a good reputation

ConsIf you're not in one of their traditional areas of focus (e.g. law) you may find that the services and support is a bit rubbish.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement has a tendency to centralise decision making and then ignore staff and students

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Very bureaucratic and not very dynamic

    Level B Academic (Current Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsThe pay is generally good for a given level. It's an attractive campus.

    ConsLittle opportunity for advancement.

There are numerous barriers to applying for grants such as having to get permission to apply which boils down to needing to have funding already to cover the gap between the allowed pay of a grant and the university salary. If they were clever they would let any and everyone apply and set up funds to bridge that gap. (They get money for administering the grants so it wouldn't be terribly difficult to find the money for those few successful candidates)

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of ITC and move away from windows as a defacto OS. Provide opportunities for early career scientists that allow interdisciplinary individuals a chance of advancement. The current system is very stogy and traditional by international standards.

good research and no credit to junior for their ideas

    Scientist (Former Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

Prosgood research but closed net groups

Consno chances of advancement, raise nor job security

Advice to Senior Managementcreate a sense of some job security in employees - renewing few months at a time is not good

Well paid with no career development

    Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsExcellent work life balance at the research assistant level. Any higher and the level of competition in the academic world requires greater work.
The union has negotiated a great pay scale with excellent incremental increases. Annual step progressions also mean a higher income each year. However once you get to the top of a step there's nowhere to go.

ConsOnce you get to the top of a step there's nowhere to go! As a general staff it takes a lot to get a promotion or a reclassification.
Also, the Vice Chancellor is making huge staff cuts in the coming year so there will be greater dissatisfaction at the University.

    No satisfied completely.

    Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Current Employee)
    Sydney (Australia)

ProsIt has a good weather. It is not too competitive. There is flexibility with your time job. Good balance with your life. There are good salaries.

ConsNo too many funds for science. There is no good comunication with your bosses. The city is very expensive and the houses are completely unafordable.

Advice to Senior ManagementShould be a better career promotion at postdoctoral level. Should be a better free career training. Sould be a better acknowledge for the people working here, for example in the web page groups there are only information about bosses.

    Depends on the faculty

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTeaching at the university pays well but it really depends on the faculty. e.g. in Business & Economics, rallying for better conditions and pay (e.g. getting paid for time spent on training) is commonplace, but almost unheard of in Science.

ConsDepending on the discipline you might often meet very arrogant academics who think that their qualifications give them the right to treat you in a condescending manner.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would suggest more involvement with unions, but as with companies, that is not likely to happen.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
