I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working for the Graduate School of Medicine at UTMC has been a wonderful experience! This position has taught me how to be responsible - since someone isn't standing over me telling me what to do. Nothing feels better when you get to pat yourself on the back for completing a task with no guidance. This job has given me numerous opportunities... I'm very blessed!

    Cons

The Graduate School offers to pay for tuition at Tennessee colleges (university and community) - the only problem is some departments let you work different schedules to attend class while others do not!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good job!

Nightmare politics. Until there is change it is a waste of state money.

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Hey, at least I have health insurance.

    Cons

Absolute terrible place to work with atrocious politics. Incompetent staff know how to work the system and others at the top are afraid to make changes even though they know it is needed. I've been told more than once: "it's happening all over campus", "you will have to wait until they retire", etc. If you want to do nothing and feel purposeless, this is the place for you. If you want to make change, better go to HR or risk being set up for anything and everything. Do not confuse UTHSC with UT; they are not the same in any aspect!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it coming new HR Alston all stars. I feel for you and the long road you have, but please keep supporting those in the field trying to make this a better place.

    Pros

Many nice people. Good cooperation. Multicultural.

    Cons

LOTS of politics. No longer about what is best students and advancement of science, but $. Some departments still suffer from the good 'ol boy club.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reevaluate priorities and consider investing in new, young researchers willing to think outside the box

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

UT-HSC is not a bad place to work, hours are pretty flexible but the nature of research being what it is you can also work some long hours and weekends to meet deadlines. Its a pretty informal working environment.

    Cons

It is an academic institution so things like salaries are not as high as in industry. But again hours are flexible, vacation packages are pretty good. Vacation days do not cancel at the end of each year but roll into the following year.

    Pros

    Pay
    Amount of Leave
    Easy vacation scheduling
    Retirement Benefits
    Health Benefits
    Flexible Schedule
    Support in immediate workplace
Support in grant writing and publications

    Cons

Being made promises that cannot be kept, rude staff, impossible HR system. HR staff are not friendly and, although I know they are trying to keep the university from being sued, they make hiring people almost impossible even if they are qualified. UTHSC frustrates me a lot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Act your age and know that others rely on you for help. Be the wise people I know you were brought up to be.

    Management needs to clean house.

I have been working at University of Tennessee Health Science Center full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Workload is not very taxing with adequate leeway to organize your work. Facility manager is easy to get along with most days. Lots of opportunity to explore individual projects. Lots of opportunities for attending seminars and classes.

    Cons

Top level management is useless. They accumulate supervisors and other employees that are only a drain on the facilities budget. Current supervisor can barely organize his own work, let alone maintain and supervise the current lab. As a benefit of being an employee, the university is supposed to waive fees for classes...however, you can only attend a total of 9 hours of classes through each college. Management has difficulties securing grant funding, yet continues to pour money into projects and personnel that give no return in the investment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house starting with personnel and projects that do not give any type of returns on the investment.

    Negative Outlook
