I worked at University of Victoria full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

As a CUPE (union) member the work/life balance was really good. Great coworkers; I lucked out and was in a great unit with a great manager - not everyone is so lucky. Opportunities to expand skills. I thought the pay was really good and the benefits excellent. The campus is beautiful.

    Cons

Bad upper-management who are out of touch with their employees. Not a lot of movement pay wise for CUPE employees. Make sure you get job evaluation after a few years, or change to higher pay grade if you want to make more money.

Oh yeah, watch out for the scourge of tent caterpillars that descend on the campus every year. Nightmare inducing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach in those horribly awkward department meetings. If you want to promote a culture of good communication and respect, you've got to learn how to communicate and how to show respect!

I have been working at University of Victoria full-time

    Pros

For those who prefer a more laid back environment, UVic is a great place to work. In some ways it feels like a government style job, the entire system is pretty bureaucratic and slow moving but the people are friendly and frequently very smart. You will get recognized for strong work effort here and it is surprisingly easy to advance.

    Cons

Depending on your age and outlook in life, UVic's pace might just be too slow for you, I know more than one friend who left for more fast paced pastures.
