Great institution, very well managed and supported by the state.

Manager of A Grant Funded Program (Current Employee) Laramie, WY

ProsExcellent colleagues, forward thinking environment. Facilities are first class as is the quality of the workforce. The students are some of the best I've been exposed to. Decent benefits, and excellent flexibility in work schedules.

ConsSalaries have been flat for nearly 5 years due to economic downturn. Although the legislature has finally passed a budget that includes some increases, the overall impact of the "no raises" has been that we've begun to loose talented people, especially researchers and support staff. Salaries do not compare well to other regional institutions.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to work hard at bringing salaries nearer to par with similar institutions.

Great student job source to earn some easy income

Night Host (Former Employee) Laramie, WY

ProsReally easy simple jobs. Can often study/do homework while at job post.

ConsHave to makeup being interested in "becoming a leader" if you say you're interested in the benefits they automatically black list you.
Some bureaucratic rules like if need repairman, can't directly call repairman instead have to call repair man's dispatcher but if that person out then stuff stays out of service until next day.

Advice to Senior ManagementSummer Resident Assistants are helpful since they're always around, but during fall/spring semesters the people hired for RA jobs seem to be hard to find.

ConsWorking for a leadership who came in and ripped us apart and changed our departments way of work.

Computer Lab Asst. and all other jobs - Incredible Opportunity for Self-Development while working in a caring community.

Computer Lab Assistant (Former Employee) Laramie, WY

ProsBest student job on-campus, working at a computer while studying. Basically getting paid to do what you would be doing otherwise. Supervisors are awesome. Techs are polite and friendly. Scheduling system is fantastic. The community is incredible. The University of Wyoming is an employer that goes out of their way to offer the most to those employed by them. The hiring process is a not terribly long or intense. Beautiful campus and friendly, down to earth people. For a rural area, it is a busy little place.

ConsThe parking is atrocious. The winters are cold, so combine that with the bad parking - and it can be pretty miserable on the worst days. Also, some of the shifts for student positions are broken down to 1hr slots. Can be quite annoying to work split shifts or one hour slots.

Advice to Senior ManagementDuring the HR process, if an application is submitted and is rejected due to the fact that it is incomplete - it would be nice to be notified before the job closes. Otherwise, this is the best place that I have ever worked.

    Great place to work

Programmer Analyst Executive (Former Employee) Laramie, WY

ProsFantastic benefits, employer contributes a large amount to retirement and encourages continuing education by providing free classes to employees, pay is reasonable for government institutions. Good culture and values, strong feeling of job security.

ConsToo many layers of middle management in some departments, which causes things to move much more slowly than they should. The hiring process takes a long time, and anything that requires a decision from upper management usually has to go through multiple meetings for approval.
