Unum not a bad place to work

Disability Benefit Specialist (Current Employee)
Worcester, MA

I have been working at Unum Group

ProsThe benefits package is very generous and the amount of paid time off is substantial even for entry level job title. The people that work there are good people and there is an easy balance with work and leizure. The benefit package is very good and I think anyone would be hard pressed to find any sort of benefit package that tops the one that they provide their employees. The company encourages people to take different jobs within the company which can prove to be beneficial for anyone that bores doing one job for too long and it also is looked as a managerial development tool.

ConsThere seems to be a lack of ability to climb the ladder and the job is essentially the same thing every day. t times, expectations of timeliness are unreasonable given the amount of duties one is responsible for. It is virtually impossible to do everything on time in an 8 hour work day. The quality assurance ratings are unreasnable as well, and those scored reflet the bonus compensation that an employee recieves. Across the company people struggle with there quality assurance score and it almost seems like it is a way to justify a low compensation bonus for the year.

Advice to Senior Managementoffer more growth oppurtunities and speed up the promotional process for those that deserve to be promoted.

A solid company with a great rack record.

Account Consultant (Current Employee)
Fort Lauderdale, FL

I have been working at Unum Group

ProsDiversity of the products offered (from an insurance perspective). The brand name also helps as Unum is one of the premier Life/Disability carriers in the nation. Our benefits package is also stellar. Another plus is that management seems to have a great track record which is important (especially in these economic times).

ConsThe opportunities for promotion are not what I would have anticipated. Opportunities for advancement in the field are not plentiful. They are if you work in their corporate office in Portland, ME. It would also be nice to have some flextime (working from home on occasion) but that practice is not well regarded.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to provide us with timely communication, especially in this economic environment.

Better than most places.

Advanced Senior Paralegal (Former Employee)
Chattanooga, TN

I worked at Unum Group

ProsBenefits. Its also a good place for a lazy person to work...

ConsAs with many jobs...the favortism. I worked there for almost 10 years and even though I benefited from the favoritism myself some times...it still wasn't fair.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit listening to what tickles your ear...

Overall a good company to work for

Account Manager (Current Employee)
Portland, ME

I have been working at Unum Group

ProsGood company to work for overall. I would say it obviously varies depending on your position and direct manager but my experience is that Unum values work / life balance and treats employees fairly. Great benefit package and I would say a fair salary for most positions. Also, company is doing a better job of engaging in community activities.

ConsDifficult environment to work in sometimes due to the conflicts between sales staff and support staff. The company has really tried to implement recognition programs to get employees more involved in the company and feel valued but they still have some work to do in this arena.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood job turning the company around over the last couple of years. Definitely headed in the right direction!

OK

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Unum Group

Pros1. salary; 2. health insurance; 3. ease of training; 4. peers; 5. tuition reimbursement; 5. 401k; 6. vision and dental.

Consmundane. repetitive tasks. little lateral movement. the claimants (nag..nag..nag..nag). working at least 45-50 hours a week, but getting paid for 40. little recognition.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo advice at this time. It falls on deaf ears. work environment surveys are meaningless; any negative reviews are either rationalized away or they change people's mind.

Strong Financially; Organized Mess on the Inside

Systems Project Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at Unum Group

ProsGreat Benefits, strong financial position

ConsManagement doesn't really want to hear "the truth:" Project estimates, pace of projects and ever-changing "rule of the day" are always in constant conflict due to weak leadership. Employees are over-worked, stressed out with low morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementNew blood (management) and new ideas are necessary in order for this company to grow beyond its stagnant state of affairs in IT. New employees with honed skills are being hired, but just "don't fit in" to the culture of "that's the way it's always been done." It's an organized mess!

Good place to work if you like routine and want no change.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Unum Group

ProsThe benefits are generous, able to neonate starting salary, and for the most part it seems that if you work in the Sales or Clinical/Vocational/Medical department, you are probably going to be a happy person at work because your department manager is accessible and reasonable because they actually have a college degree.

ConsI've observed first hand the aggressive and incompetent behavior of directors and associate VPs in meetings that is down right embarrassing. Many of the DBS are bright, however there is very little PROFESSIONAL GROWTH and they receive poor leadership from their directors, who are jaded from working for the company for so long.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think the company should require the same educational mandates from their management and higher level executives as they do from there DBS. How does a company expect college-degree associate to have respect for management, when management doesn't have an college degree.
