I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pay and Benefits are the best you'll find in the Chattanooga area. Coworkers and professional and friendly. Downtown office location is nice. Overall, the company is well managed and operates smoothly for it's size. Company is a respected industry leader.

    Cons

Work can be monotonous and not very challenging or engaging. If you want to be challenged professionally, you'll have to work very hard to seek out challenges.
As with most corporations of this size, there is some dead-weight (employees who are either incompetent or lazy but remain employed). If you are competent and have a strong work ethic, it's possible that you'll end up carrying the weight of some of these employees.
Performance review process is just annoying paperwork that no one takes seriously.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to offer outstanding pay and benefits.
Revisit the performance review process and empower managers to manage without using canned processes and tools that lack value.

    Pros

The benefits are great and they understand that life happens. Paid time off is very generous and they understand that everyone has a life outside of work.

    Cons

The company is so large that often times you may feel like you are just a number.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be open to change.

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Unum is a friendly place, and many employees have been here for 15, 25, 30, and even 40+ years! The pay is very fair, and there's also an annual performance-based incentive. Great benefits, too.

    Cons

The performance rating system is not a good one. Under the current model, managers must select someone from their team to get a "partially meets" rating, even if ALL of their team members are performing well. To be forced to arbitrarily give an employee a poor review is difficult at best, and downright unethical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really need to move away from this review model. Other big-named companies have tried this model and it failed. Wisely, they moved away from it, and I hope that Unum will too. We are losing employees because of this.

    Pros

Very professional and friendly colleagues. Excellent employer for young people especially. Conservative environment. There are a lot of people at Unum who have worked for the company their entire working career (25+ years). Very positive and fun environment. Unum has excellent training programs.

    Cons

Unum is a super competitive and you always have to prove your value. Unum makes changes every year which could result in job loss.

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The compensation and benefits at Unum are top-notch as many other reviewers have reported. However, I've found that it is the people at Unum (managers or otherwise) that make the experience at Unum great. The people I've met thus far are well grounded in reality. They will not forget that you are a person and not a machine. The Paid Time Off is incredible and the work environment is busy but supportive. It is easy to make friends, laugh with coworkers and still be productive.

    Cons

Not all organizations within Unum are constantly advancing or coming up with innovative ideas. However, an insurance company does not need to be a cutting edge technology company. Projects may take longer than they should to complete in some organizations because there are many day-to-day tasks that trump special projects. This really isn't a con because there are parts of the business that just need to work. But if you are looking for rapid innovation don't join sectors that are about the day-to-day grind. Look for groups at Unum that develop strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have no complaints about the managers I've interacted with. Almost all are friendly or at least reasonable. There is plenty of communication between managers and direct reports.

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Unum's leadership development program is the best in the industry. The program gives young adults exposure to senior leader mentorship and offers an indepth tour around the company. Associates complete 3 rotations in different areas of the corporation for 12-18 months each. Upon program completion, placement into a director level role is the norm.

    Cons

Rotations sometimes require temporary relocation among company headquarters. While a great opportunity, this can be difficult for colleagues with spouses or young families.

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Incredible company with even better employees. Ample opportunity for professionald growth and development. Huge commitment to the communities in which the company operates. Good benefits package - including paid time off, retirement, health, vision, dental, etc. Also provides employees with paid time for volunteering! ACCESSIBLE senior leadership team - see them regularly in the hallways and they always remember names and say hello.

    Cons

As with any company that operates across multiple geographical locations, it can be challenging to adjust to slight cultural differences between sites. While some departments offer great flexibility when it comes to work schedules (build your own daily schedule around core business hours of 9-3, flexibiltiy for occassional work at home arrangements, etc.), there is some work that could be done for more consistency across departments and sites within the company
