    Solid Company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent benefits, generally provides good work-life balance, some areas provide nice advancement opportunities.

ConsDon't count on a raise unless you change job levels, which can be difficult to do. Old software systems don't work together and can be frustrating.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the conservative strategy, but provide more communication to non-management employees.

Stable job security with room to grow

    Manager (Current Employee) Portland, ME

ProsFrom what I've witnessed first hand and second hand, this company is better than most when it comes to weighing pros and cons. The benefits are good. Medical, dental, vision, etc. and 401K match up to 5%. The company generally cares about its customers and the employees first behind making a profit. There are opportunities to rise within the company and they make walk-ins feel empowered in upward mobility. People can work from home. You get a decent amount of PTO days from the start. Unum is a big contributor in the community at large, giving to charities, partnering with education, internships, tuition reimbursement, & drives of every kind. The people here also, mostly, get along. We have a lot of smart, talented individuals and the company makes employees do a lot to live the brand - essentially setting the bar really high and measuring every inch to ensure we can strive to such standards. On top of this Unum also offers a decent incentive bonus every year, an above average fitness facility, group clubs, shopping discounts, and other wellness programs. In the end, would I recommend this place to a friend, absolutely.

ConsCompany culture is mostly conservative, read not a lot of young people, or only in certain departments. The daily work is not very cool. Sales people are treated like hotshots on account of they generate $$$ for us. Some job roles can be very time consuming. You might be the only one of your team not in the same physical home office. Cubicles everywhere. Gym memberships and classes are grossly too expensive. Technology in general, right down to the generic computers given to us, the outdated browsers we're forced to use, and the systems that run this company are lackluster, and behind the pace of our competitors. We have a real shortage of technology innovation from the top down.

    FMLA LEAVE SPECIALIST

FMLA Leave Specialist (Current Employee) Chattanooga, TN

ProsEnjoyed working for the company as they invest in employees and believes in promoting within. The work dress standards are business casual and I did not experience micromanagement. Employees were given the freedom to complete tasks responsibly and on time.

ConsI have no cons to report at this time.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe're very open to new ideas and implemented an open-door policy for all.

Great Benefits and opportunity to make good money

Client Manager (Current Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsGreat office atmosphere with a lot of experience. I love to travel and the role allows me to do that. In addition, bonuses pay out throughout the year.

ConsThe field is often overlooked compared to the home office. In addition, the change in account management has changed and it has been difficult to get some clients on board with that.

Unum Group is a great company to work for

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Portland, ME

ProsExcellent attention to work life balance on a corporate level (depends on your manager and what department you work for). Great medical, dental and vision benefits, including decent 401k matching, and ability to purchase Unum's voluntary benefits products at a good price such as Group Critical Illness insurance, long term care insurance, etc. 10,000 employees worldwide to network with.

ConsCorporate red tape as at any large company.

    Very good culture

Assistant Vice President & Actuary (Former Employee) Portland, ME

Pros1. They are an industry leader in their business
    2. Very good working culture - people are very good to each other
    3. Operational improvements have been very significant over the last several years. Along with strong financial position, they are well positioned when the economy improves.
    4. Benefits are very good, while salaries are market average.
    5. Long tenures and they like to promote from within.

ConsGood work will be recognized, but it's an insurance company, so it's not flashy.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
