    I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good compensation and generous time off

    Cons

    Over the last three to four years the company has scrambled to change things constantly to fix and adjust to the economy. As a result it's been a 100% over kill on results at any cost and middle leaders have put an huge burden and pressure on employees to do more with less and be happy about it. Candor is not a reality at all. The middle management leaders will take a professionally candid comment in the appropriate setting and use that to decide who stays and who goes when downsizing. I've seen it happen and it definately makes people put their heads down and just work as much as they can to avoid being "off the list". The comments about having 7 manager in 7 years is reality in many of the operations and benefits areas as reorgs and strategies change every 6-12 months and you have to stop and start on your development, your goals and revalidate your results with new leadership. this is driving a very unhealthy competitive environment where employees are backstabing others to try to ensure they are viewed as a top employee. In most cases meeting goals can mean no raise. And to meet goals you work well over 40 hours a week. Every cent for development has been taken away for Managers and below. I buy my own paper to ensure I have some. A lot of talent is being lost due to new managers coming in and listening to others opinions. So the key is to stay below the radar and keep your comments about improvements to yourself or your immediate family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    People managements needs to be just as high as a priority in Operations as results are. People need to feel valued and they'll go that extra mile. Militant Leadership will not get us to exceed our goals. It's really scary on the ground, I wish you could really see that.

    Pros

    Unum has a great benefits package. You receive double the amount of vacation days an employee will typically get from a company, outside of the insurance industry. Bonus incentive program for all employees. Work from home option. Onsite company gyms. Family friendly event ticket giveaways to minor league sporting events. Great training opportunities. Great programs for employees who are very involved in community service activities, outside of United Way donations, you as an individual can leverage Unum’s charitable giving, for a cause you are passionate about. Great management/HR support for internal job opportunities posted, leadership programs, and mentorships. Great CEO and CFO leadership, the company is in good hands. Job security.

    Cons

    Working for a large insurance company is as soul crushing and joyless as it sounds. Managers are a bunch of talking heads, that provide little insight, and will drag you into an endless series of meetings, only to state generic, and painfully obvious statements, like “technology is important to the company’s growth.” The perception of your importance is the only thing that matters, and is solely based on your manager’s opinion of you, which can often be an emotional rollercoaster. As a result of this, you can never be honest, even on an “anonymous” work environment survey. The recognition/award system leaves a lot to be desired. The awards and recognitions are cheesy, and seen as a way of snubbing other employees/managers/teams/departments, and often go to the biggest toadies. Management not only encourages an extremely competitive environment, but drills it into your work culture with “everyone must be a leader” commitments, which has everyone competing for funny money, and 1% yearly cost-of-living increases. Work morale is low, as employees feel overworked, overtired, and unappreciated. Half the managers are megalomaniacs, who fly on the corporate jet a couple of times a year, to attend meetings catered by a low-grade foodservice. Which as an employee, you will receive emails, about the available food scraps you may have, after managers are done picking through them. You will go to one “corporate outing” a year, which is more of a mandatory attendance/forced event rather than an event employees look forward to, this overshadows the spirit and effort of it all. All of this is considered the “Unum culture”, and will be shoved down your throat, with the attitude of “you are lucky to get even that” and “look for a new job.” All of this may impact your long-term career development goals depending on your ambitions and needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    When you have a quarterly meeting with over seven hundred employees, and no one has a single question, that should tell you something. The employee review process encourages over competitive behavior/politics, which sometimes borderlines a hostile work environment, and is more tiring than the actual job description itself. Unum would be much better served to find a way to channel the energy wasted on internal infighting, into better products, and services, versus encouraging counterproductive behavior, which forces the company to bleed money, and will continue to hold back Unum’s true potential, to be a solvent powerhouse in the insurance industry. If politics was truly 75% of my job, Unum paid a price tag for ten years worth of work, but only received two years and some change of actual productivity. This not just hurts Unum and its shareholders, but it hurts everyone in the company, including externalities, that reach the state, national, and global level. Unum has committed, and communicated to all, its responsibility to be more successful company.

    4 weeks of vacation- trust me you'll need it
    pay is higher than average
    flexible - able to work from home

    I had numerous bosses - total of 7 or 8 in three years

    Pros

    The best training in the industry, very knowledgable management team (probably the best in the industry) great benefis. Very solid group of senior management. A good team atmosphere, with tenured service staff.

    Cons

    Very small territories given to reps (even senior reps) and new models call for more reps in evey city. The "churn and burn" atmosphere of sales permeates throughout the salesforce. It can be tough to coexist with producing managers that may or may not have a reps best interest first. Too often you are caught looking over your shoulder at trainees that are waiting for a territory to open up or take territory from every rep.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Too many reps, too many mangers. Your competition has proved that a leaner model not only works, but is necessary in todays market. Too much solid talent has left this organizaiton to be top sales rep for your competition.

    Processes keep changing, no input sought from those people actually performing the essential work duties
    Management does not know how to develop performance
    Management pays attention only to favorite employees, ignores the rest
    Management does not communicate professionally
    Senior management has no clue what directors are doing or how they treat employees
    Advancement and promotions tied to whether someone likes the employee, now how the employee performs

    Advice to senior management
    1. Get rid of most of the directors, hire people who know how to lead and develop
    2. Stop getting rid of the most talented people (because you neglect them) and fire the incompetent ones
    3. Stop promoting people who the Worcester management team don't even have faith or confidence in
    4. Teach your directors how to manage stress effectively - every single month during the last week they freak out, take their frustrations and anxieties out on the employees and manipulate/pressure the employees to close claims inappropriately - it is getting worse and Worcester senior management just protects their directors rather than doing anything about it

    Pros

    Unum has excellent health, vision, and dental care packages. The PTO is pretty generous. However the actually salary is below industry standard

    Cons

    Working at Unum is a very grueling task especially for a DBS. Unum is slow to promote and the the career path is pretty terrible. Some of the managers are incompenent and only care about their numbers. Sadly really intelligent people at Unum end up leaving because of the lack of opprotunities avaliable. The same people are the ones who get recognized. The pay doesn't reflect the work. Pesronally I feel as though Unum doens't recognize talent. DBS are at the bottom of the totem pole at this company even though we are the ones doing the most work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Promotions should be based on quality of work not time served on the job. I also believe that senior management should develop more opprotunities to move up in the company. The pay for a DBS needs to be increased.

    Pros

    I went to work for Unum straight out of college. I found it a learning experience and a real eye-opener experience in regards to learning about corporate culture.

    Cons

    Bottom line, to much work with not enough pay.

    Better communication with staff. Improve the way in which employees can post out to other positions.

    Pros

    Generous paid time off (combination of sick leave and vacation), above average other benefits. Pay is above average.

    Cons

    Management and work flow structure make getting anything done virtually impossible. Directives are constantly coming from 3-4 different directions. HEAVY reliance on e-mail. 100+ per day is the norm in my former department. Very few difference makers. Mostly middle management types looking to cover their own butts. So many people are looking only out for themselves and their annual reviews that a true cohesive goal is virtually impossible. Front line employees end up taking direction from more than 3-4 people creating chaos in their workload.
