Company has a monopoly on "good" jobs in Southern Maine

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits including for domestic partners. Tuition reimbursement includes books and you need only a B-. Sometimes interesting work and there are some truly excellent people there (not necessarily Managers and above, though).

    Cons

I agree with many existing reviews here. In my experience this company is slow to give raises unless you slavishly conform to the existing corporate culture (which means change is slow if it erupts at all, and then sometime's squashed). Some IT systems are awful: old, poorly understood and supported, clunky. As noted by others, some recognition programs are thought by many to be for rewarding favorite employees only, not merit-based. This company attracts workers partly because there aren't many large employers in Southern Maine, and not based on its own strengths....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask the employees: they have plenty of good ideas.

    I worked at Unum Group

    Pros

The best reasons to work for Unum Group are for the stability & pay a fair wage.

    Cons

It's not that Unum Group is a horrible place to work. Just every other company I've worked for has out performed them on almost all aspects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unum is not a horrible place to work but one will quickly see their short comings working for other people. Anyone with a little bit of ambition will stick out easily here which is not always a good thing. Usually that person gets stuck with all of the work.

Sr Leadership should reassess the level of talent they have a middle management level. The company will continue to be mediocre until they change the level of middle management talent.

    I worked at Unum Group

    Pros

great benefits package, generous time off, some interesting and new technology for an insurance company.

    Cons

if you're in a management position, you'll never be able to take the time off. Organizational resistance to change is huge, and getting simple improvements through is very difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

focus on long term value creation in the marketplace - the stock will respond over time.

I have been working at Unum Group

    Pros

The benefits package is very generous and the amount of paid time off is substantial even for entry level job title. The people that work there are good people and there is an easy balance with work and leizure. The benefit package is very good and I think anyone would be hard pressed to find any sort of benefit package that tops the one that they provide their employees. The company encourages people to take different jobs within the company which can prove to be beneficial for anyone that bores doing one job for too long and it also is looked as a managerial development tool.

    Cons

There seems to be a lack of ability to climb the ladder and the job is essentially the same thing every day. t times, expectations of timeliness are unreasonable given the amount of duties one is responsible for. It is virtually impossible to do everything on time in an 8 hour work day. The quality assurance ratings are unreasnable as well, and those scored reflet the bonus compensation that an employee recieves. Across the company people struggle with there quality assurance score and it almost seems like it is a way to justify a low compensation bonus for the year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

offer more growth oppurtunities and speed up the promotional process for those that deserve to be promoted.

I have been working at Unum Group

    Pros

Diversity of the products offered (from an insurance perspective). The brand name also helps as Unum is one of the premier Life/Disability carriers in the nation. Our benefits package is also stellar. Another plus is that management seems to have a great track record which is important (especially in these economic times).

    Cons

The opportunities for promotion are not what I would have anticipated. Opportunities for advancement in the field are not plentiful. They are if you work in their corporate office in Portland, ME. It would also be nice to have some flextime (working from home on occasion) but that practice is not well regarded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to provide us with timely communication, especially in this economic environment.

    Pros

Benefits. Its also a good place for a lazy person to work...

    Cons

As with many jobs...the favortism. I worked there for almost 10 years and even though I benefited from the favoritism myself some times...it still wasn't fair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Good company to work for overall. I would say it obviously varies depending on your position and direct manager but my experience is that Unum values work / life balance and treats employees fairly. Great benefit package and I would say a fair salary for most positions. Also, company is doing a better job of engaging in community activities.

    Cons

Difficult environment to work in sometimes due to the conflicts between sales staff and support staff. The company has really tried to implement recognition programs to get employees more involved in the company and feel valued but they still have some work to do in this arena.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good job turning the company around over the last couple of years. Definitely headed in the right direction!
