    Pros

Your performance is the key to your profitability with this company. From the onset, employees are given the training and tools necessary to create their own success. Qualifying Sales Reps are rewarded handsomely with bonuses including week-long Corporate Annual Sales Conferences, salary bonuses, and other performance based incentive programs. Reps are expected to, and their performance is accessed based on their meeting the sales goals prescribed to them by their Office Manager.

    Cons

The shortcomings are few, but noteworthy. While Unum often promotes from within, the ceiling for most employees will be Sales Rep, and for numbered few per office, Senior Account Executive. Management positions are in short supply.

I have been working at Unum Group

    Pros

UNUM pays very well compared to other companies in the area. It's actually one of the better paying companies in the state. It has a very good benefits package, and supports a work / home balance.

    Cons

I think that Unum's lacks alot of recognition of employees, especially in IT.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, I think it has become a really good company.

I have been working at Unum Group

    Pros

Unum is a great company for several reasons. They actually care about the employees. They will do whatever it takes to make sure we have the tools and information necessary to do our job as efficiently and effectively as possible. They also have a great flexible schedule program, so if you need to leave during the day to get things done, you can make up the time later.

    Cons

It can be difficult to get promoted and the timeframes for promotions are kind of long. Other than that, it is a great place to work and start a career. I really enjoy the atomsphere.

I have been working at Unum Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

benefits, employees, team enviroment, continuous improvement culture

    Cons

Senior management is not a proponent of work at home/alternative works schedules as they should be. More opportunities to effectively utilize social media and technology to simplify work and be more effeicient, as well as keeping up with competition.

Striving to be a competitor in the insurance industry.

I have been working at Unum Group full-time

    Pros

There are many opportunities for growth and development. There are competitive benefits including a pension which is almost unheard of today.

    Cons

The internal technology of Unum is limited and frustrating. Several years after merging the companies together serious issues remain that are hindering the company's competitive advantage.

A large corporation that tries to do the right things

    I worked at Unum Group

    Pros

They pay well and offer good benefits. If the company does well, they pay an annual bonus based on performance. The corporate culture encourages mangers to help employees with their career path and to be fair about time off due to personal issues. There are a lot of directions o go if you want to change your career path. The company is very civic minded.

    Cons

As a large corporation, sometimes employee communications aren't handled as well as they could be. The corporate rewards program seems to have developed into allowing some managers' to pick their favorite employees more than once rather than the best producing ones. Although they have an excellent severence package, there is a perception within the company that the layoffs seem to be aimed at older employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more IT people - there weren't enough to support the work that the various departments needed to do to keep the customer service ratings high.

I have been working at Unum Group

    Pros

They do have great benefits, but they're changing their health insurance group in January so I don't know how similar it will be. They promised they would be the same, but that could just be corporate jargon

    Cons

I've been there 4 months now and my experience has been largely negative. From everyone I've talked to, I seem to be the exception to the average though. My background check came back with a felony, and HR wasn't very nice about believing it was a case of mistaken identity- which it obviously was. I've also had two managers in the first 3 months I was there, and neither one gave me much feedback or development. Now I'm about to get a third manager, and feel even more thrown to the winds. I'm trying to stick it out my 18 months to transfer to another position. The company's great, just don't expect much support.
