    Pros

The discounts for your pets is nice, monthly meetings to keep employees up to speed with new policies.

    Cons

Everything else. Management is conniving. The threat of being fired is always looming. Not a lot of focus on the client services. Be prepared to loose hours in order for vca to make their monthly budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to your clients and employee morale.

    Pros

Doctors are great Technicians go above and beyond. The front desk people are with few exceptions hard working and helpful.

    Cons

Regarding the management: I have never seen a company run with the junior high school mentality. If a certain manager doesn't like you, you will eventually be fired. If it takes lies and distortion to do it then this certain manager will not hesitate to stoop to that level. This manager can accomplish her goals with the total blind eyes and deaf ears of upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen and pay attention.

I have been working at VCA Antech full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the benefits were decent. I did like the 401K plan. However, instead of focusing on quality of care for our clients, the focus is strictly on how much money we make them. Period. It doesn't matter how bad the service is as long as we make the budget at the end of the day. It's ridiculous.

    Cons

They cut our staff and cut our pay. The management is conniving, always looking to penny pinch our clients and short change the employees. We have lost so many clients since VCA bought our wonderful little practice that I'm embarrassed to say I work here. Instead of focusing on quality of care, they focus on quantity of clients, no matter how rushed and incomplete the care may be. I am currently researching other job opportunities, which brought to this fabulous little website.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating your employees like cattle and invest in your staff, not stretch them to the breaking point.

    Pros

Excellent vets so one can learn and get experience in many fields especially at a specialty center. Get to work with animals and that is my passion.

    Cons

Cons are too many to list but the most important are:
LOW PAY AND NEVER GET THE PROMISED REVIEWS AND SALARY ADJUSTMENTS. I have worked at 2 of the hospitals in the greater Seattle area and it is the same at both places. Always short staffed, schedules constantly changing and no schedule until the day before the week begins. How does one have a "life". I can't even schedule dr. appointments because I never have the same days off. I took my original job at VCA with a cut in pay but a promise of a raise in 3 months. I soon found out that there was a freeze on pay increases before I was hired. I was LIED TO AT THE VERY BEGINNING!! It has been 6-10 years and still no raise! I don't make enough money to live on my own so am at the mercy of roommates. Not what I expected when I went to school to be a licensed vet tech.
IRREGULAR WORK HOURS as stated before no set schedule or shift. Expected to work until 11 p.m. one day and be back at 6:00 the next. REALLY??? How do you expect your employees to be at the top of their game with such nonsense??
NO BREAKS! I work 12-16 hours a day and rarely get a break, let alone lunch.
SICK LEAVE & VACATION?? Pretty much non existent. You can accrue only so much time but are not able to use what you are owed. Even when sick, and with a doctors note, you are told to come in! (Always short staffed as they can't keep employees because of all the issues listed above!)
MANAGEMENT is always changing---One just gets used to one manager and poof, the next day they are gone with no explanation.
BENEFITS? WHAT A JOKE---Sick leave can not be used, same with vacation. Medical is VERY expensive and covers very little. Basically I don't make enough money to go to the doctor even with this crappy insurance.
    PROMOTIONS - non existent
MANY EMPLOYMENT LAWS ARE BROKEN DAILY....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You charge an arm and a leg for the treatments given to animals but it appears that all of that money goes to the corporations upper management. You treat your patients better than you treat your employees. What is wrong with you. We provide the best care possible for the patients--why don't you recognize this with salary increases and even a sincere "Thank You" for a job well done?

Basically the VCA owners should be EMBARRASED AND ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!!

I worked at VCA Antech full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Fantastic staff, I've never worked with such skilled assistants. Good pet discounts (only 4 pets though!), and due to size of VCA, discounts are available at specialty clinics.

    Cons

Staff members are just numbers to management. "Understaffed" doesn't even begin to cover it. It's scary to think about how much we did with how few people. There were days I worked 14 hours, left after 9pm, back at 7 am. Nothing was appreciated though, no one ever says "thank you", instead we constantly got in trouble for overtime. VCA runs staff members til they drop, then dumps them. Benefits suck - insurance was unaffordable, only 3 holidays. It's very much a corporation and sometimes all about $$$ - there were many days I felt like a used car sales man.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your staff members, the corporation will benefit!! Appreciation goes a long way! At least pay nationally recognized holidays!

    Pros

Pet discount is great at 75% off.

    Cons

The rate of pay is terrible even for the amount of experience I had. There is not really an opportunity to move up in the company.

I worked at VCA Antech full-time

    Pros

good pet discount although prices are high to begin with
locations everywhere good if moving you can transfer to another location until you get to know the area and hopefully find something better and trust me it shouldn't be hard to find

    Cons

    very under paid
never a consistent schedule, changes day to day week to week
get sent home if there's no appts bc they cant loose money
have to stay late other times-like an hour or two late
get called right before coming in saying don't come in today its to dead
get called before shifts saying call back at 12 to see when to come in the 3 to see when to come in basically your entire day turns to on call status
cut hours frequently and when they send people home then appts book up and we are very very understaffed
SO MUCH FAVORTISM - only if your go out and drink and are friends with management do you get any appreciation/ first say in the scheduling
say they have no money for raises or anything but give vets giftc ards for high performance each month/ always redoing the hospital in some way
randomly extend hours/ days open with hardly any notice to employees
cut hours to 28-36 for full time and never let you have overtime even when understaffed
    NO ROOM FOR GROWTH

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop favoring employees, stop going out and trying to be best friends with them this isn't high school or college its a business.
stop caring more about how much money you are making and start caring about your employees because then the employees will care more about the company instead of having such high turn over rates or employees saying everyday they come in they shoudl've called out

I worked at VCA Antech full-time

    Pros

Good Benefits (401k, health, pet benefits, CE days and funds) . Good pay. Good CE events. Several hospitals in network across country.

    Cons

Lack of emphasis on quality patient care, work ethic, and client service. Too much emphasis on everybody being best friends. Way too much favoritism based on who is friends with who. Lack of professionalism

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on what a veterinary hospital is supposed to be there for. Patient care and client service. Allow your medical directors and hospital managers to manage. And if they are not managing, they should not be there. Remove the focus from being one big party.
