    Sr Program Manager

Senior Program Manager (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsMany great people who believe in the company.

ConsLots of primadonas work here making it very difficult to do the right thing. They have been there a long time, and any change for the better is considered a threat. As a result, they will use their political connections to have you fired.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you cater to the primadonas, you will never be able to take the company to the next level. Upper management is keeping the company stock is stagnate by not taking the advice of their new employees.

Good place if your manager is good.

Engineering Manager R&D (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsCompany is in a great position for the cloud computing business. Nice compass, good pay, lots of training.

ConsToo many re-org. Trying to be a big company, but sometimes lost its direction and become more and more political.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease make sure that the re-org impacts employees as least as possible. And make sure that the new manager will look at the review and provide opportunities to the new comers.
Make sure that direct manager has less power to decide an employee's fate.

Great product, good ideas and good platform for innovation

Staff Engineer (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

Prossome brilliant individuals remain stifled by management and constantly evolving priorities

Conscollective attrition of brilliant individuals that were piecemeal to a special sauce; propelling forward as opposed to moving along

Good company, a lot of growing pains

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Austin, TX

ProsSmart people, great benefits, challenging work, general work/life balance and opportunity (for some)

ConsCan be reactive environment, short-sighted management and strategies (quarter to quarter or end of quarter), lots of starts and stops, slow to promote people. Hard for women to move high in the ranks. Very 'deliverables' focused environment -- sometimes more about producing 'something' versus the RIGHT thing.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company has had record profits but budgets are continually cut or frozen so teams are being asked to do even more with less and it's happening at the expense of your people and the customers and partners we serve. Give us what we need to be successful and you will have more loyalty all around. Also stop being so reactive and allow us to focus on more than one thing at a time - we can do that.

    One trick pony!!!

Sales Manager (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsGreat working environment. Smart people. Excellent products. Admirable reputation

ConsHas become a bit of a 'good old boys' club and middle management has become a breeding ground for sycophants. Upper management is comprised of many FOC's(friend of Carl's[Eschenbach]) who are were good when VMW was a start-up but who are now out of their depth . The company has lost its way a little as it has grown and this has killed off its wonderful culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not suppress talent. Re-engage with the channel and build a senior management team that can do this. Employ the best and most qualified to promote NSX and not FOC's and sycophants. Without success in this area you will become a one trick pony.

All depends in which team you land.

Senior R&D Manager (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsBeautiful campus, at least the old part, Good benefits, Job security.

ConsPolitics, chaotic (given company size). vmware is an amalgamate of acquisitions with lots of way to integrate them in. Company is too inert to effectively learn from past mistakes.

Advice to Senior ManagementHolding on to incumbent non performing upper management staff poisons troop morale. Put result based metrics in place to help separate the wheat from the chaff.

    full of talented people

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

Prostechnicality and innovation are centric in the engineering side.

Consmanagement is satisfied with what they have and is lack of vision

Advice to Senior Managementprocess is over emphasized in some management and it makes everything becomes a political issue.
