Current Employee – been working at VMware full-time for less than a year
Pros – Leader in virtualization industry; professional growth opportunities; culture, people and executive leadership team; fast paced environment
Cons – Poor leadership in Small to Midsize Business division with very "green" inside managers with no or limited experience in managing a team or true understanding of how to motivate their sales professionals
Advice to Senior Management – Hire Inside Managers with proven leadership skills that have been demonstrated by previous experience
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Former Employee – worked at VMware full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Great teams that contribute tirelessly to the company goal. Good salaries and benefits.
Cons – Focused more on selling, than on the folks that work behind the scenes. Outsourcing personnel to cut costs, at the expense of internal people.
Advice to Senior Management – Remember what VMware was like pre-IPO. So many people loved working there; now, those who have left are glad they did...

Current Employee – been working at VMware full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Great products, solid foundation to build upon, lots of opportunity for changing jobs
Cons – Constant changes of direction from upper management. Can't decide between having a vision and regressing into business as usual. Anything vaguely resembling vision vanishes quickly as it trickles down the management stack.
Advice to Senior Management – Buy into your own visions. Give development a chance to work on crazy ideas again. Allow newly acquired companies/people to mingle with the culture-rich parts of the company. Knock down the silos, and look at how acquired tech can fit into more than just one area, instead of forcing people to keep reinventing the wheel you just bought

Former Employee – worked at VMware full-time for more than a year
Pros – Great campus and benefits.
There are a lot of really smart people here.
Pay was more than adequate.
There are a lot of different projects so you can move around to new things.
Cons – This is a really big group of developers and it's hard not to feel overwhelmed by the bureaucracy and complexity of the products and organizations.
Be prepared to be re-organized about every 6 months. VMware has some significant growing pains and isn't always effective at using all the talent they've hired.
Much of the work is re-active and not pro-active.
Advice to Senior Management – I think the software development groups need to be more autonomous. It seemed like the various products where all intertwined with a huge cumbersome build process. It had moved beyond manageable. I ended up working in a group that spent all its time reacting to problems and fixing them. The root cause of the problems was not fixed though.

Current Employee – been working at VMware full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Good work/life balance, flexible hours and possibility to work from home, might work on interesting stuff (but this greatly depends on which group you're in).
Cons – Management likes those who talk more than those who work. No opportunity to grow (might be my personal experience, but still).
Advice to Senior Management – No advice here.

Current Employee – been working at VMware full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great technology that is used everywhere. Company has lots of potential and their are many market growth opportunities. Growth opportunities within the company too.
Cons – Becoming a big company. Rewards depend on the team you work with. Fast growth has led to some waste. Growing fast means processes and standards have fallen behind and there's still some chaos.
