Nice campus and pay | Not-so-interesting product roadmap | Some engineering teams do not code

    Pros

    - Pioneers of cloud software, it is THE company if you are a cloud computing enthusiast - Pretty good campus - Best place for systems engineering - You'll get to learn lots of low level stuff - Good pay - Nice events - Friday bashes, VMware unplugged, RADIO(limited admission) & VMWorld - Voice of VMware - A survey where you'll get to anonymously review your boss which is really great

    Cons

    - Be careful about the org you join, coz, some teams don't write significant code and all they do is things like bug triaging etc, which can be quite dangerous if you are a developer at heart - Some managers tend to nag the employees and some don't even give a sh*t and just slack off, both are not good - After couple of years, work can get routine and boring

    Advice to Management

Be innovative, architect what's next than just saying it; create next game changing product like vSphere !

    Pros

Great benefits, high payscale. Some of the brightest and friendliest people I've ever worked with. Innovative company.

    Cons

EMC culture is "seeping in" and is increasingly apparent. Difficult to maintain work-life balance with workaholic "yes man" micromanager expectations. A lot of process redundancy with resistance to change. Career advancement may lead to "pay reset" (in my case paying less money!). Benefits are being clamped down on to reduce costs (i.e., elimination of internet reimbursement, increasingly lowering cell phone plan reimbursement amounts, etc). Lots and lots of inefficiencies that are frustrating to deal with. Much of that has to do with management bloat, red tape, resistance to change, resistance to address inefficient processes & procedures.

    Advice to Management

Make managers (especially "home grown managers") go through regular mandatory manager training with respect to management style and work life balance. There is an increasing amount of turnover as of late and there are specific reasons for it.

    Pros

Good place. People are very helpful and open. You can easily walk into anyone's office and ask anything.

    Cons

Sometimes the business decission made doesn't make sense. VMware is doing lot of catching up with things like AWS, Docker etc, so there is always a hurry to deliver, hence not always the right decision is taken.

    Advice to Management

Do the right thing which are sustainable going forward rather than quickly deliver something and redoing it again.

    Pros

-Very smart employees -Truly collaborative culture, you can approach nearly anyone and if you are competent, you will be welcomed with open arms -In my group, caring and inclusive management team -Excellent team work and camaraderie -People are happy here -Work life balance is the best I have seen; don't get me wrong, we work hard, but people know when to unplug.

    Cons

-As mentioned by others, the company's grown so fast, there seems to be some duplication and redundancy in work done across several organizations -Mid-Level (Managers to Sr. Directors) could use training in how to encourage and develop employees. Difference at VMW, this is recognized and discussed. There are programs being kicked off to help managers learn how to be effective leaders. I have not seen this in similar companies in my 20+years in the Valley.

    Advice to Management

Be crystal clear about what is most important for VMW to realize its strategies in the next 3-5 years, repeat, repeat and repeat again.

    Pros

Fast paced-environment, great place to learn from new challenges. VMware is innovative at its core, company has vision and makes really cool, cutting edge products and solutions.

    Cons

Company is evolving, culture is evolving, some lack of clarity requiring ability to deal with ambiguity and adapting to changing landscape.

    Advice to Management

Listen, inspire and develop compassionate leadership. If you focus on employees, empowerment and leverage each person's strengths, then you will get the best out of each person.

    Pros

Fast paced with highly technical learning experiences. Vast resources available at disposal to leverage.

    Cons

High expectations for timeline software development of features. Lack of ownership and direction for areas of products and priorities.

    Advice to Management

Have the discipline to enforce that teams to align to the corporate vision implies that innovation should result in overall improvement of the product portfolio rather than micro-startup products that operate in isolation.

    Pros

    - Global Team that's getting aligned - There is a clear direction on our goals - Flexible work schedule (can work from home) - great coworkers that turn into friends - fun environment

    Cons

    - Heavy work load plus a lot of projects with little bandwidth and no time - several managers and staffing leadership to please and get pulled several directions at one time - Your time isn't valued - Staffing managers and Leadership don't show up for 1:1s or project calls and don't even send a note to you apologizing (managers you support and managers you may report into no show) - work is assigned to you without you ever reviewing your workload, you're expected pick it up without being asked if you can manage it with the other 99 things you are currently working on

    Advice to Management

Train all management Upper (Sr. Directors) through Middle (managers/supervisors) on how they should treat employees to make them feel valued and not like working robots then follow up and make sure they are treating their employees well. Thank you goes a long way when you are working all hours of the day and night to meet deadlines.
