A good company to work at the beginning of a career

    Staff Engineer (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsSome extremely talented and hard-working people, you can learn a lot from them. Very nice work and life balance - unlimited vacation. Opportunities to explore different aspects of the company products and cutting edge technologies. Good total compensation package - may not be as good as other big names but still very good. Office is on the beautiful hill of Palo Alto. Much better commute experience through 280 over 101.

ConsCareer growth is questionable given such a large company. Some middle managers coming from other big companies tend to hire people they knew from their past companies.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind some exceptional and visionary middle managers. They can make correct move of the products as well as promote good work of the employees.

Fantastic company with vision and great technology.

    Senior Marketing Manager (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsGreat company culture of giving back to the community. Top executives are smart and there is lots of opportunity for company growth.

ConsLack of process--operates like a start up. Lack of a presence solution makes collaboration a challenge--heavy email culture, death by power point and unnecessary conference calls. Work load is insane, resulting in churn and burn.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage mid managers to mentor and develop employees and be true to the culture and values.

Brilliant technology, the right culture, excellent people

Senior Director, Product Management (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

Prosit's always moving like a startup, there's no standing still and you have every opportunity to be part of changing the face of IT. There's no shortage of competition but you always feel like the leading contender.

Consdifficult to navigate, sometimes lacks coordination across business units and a definite lack of organized processes. Sometimes a bit too much ADHD but likely required in the cloud computing market.

Advice to Senior Managementwe went from being an innovative powerhouse with a strong focus on customers to being more focused on the market and follow the money. Don't lose the customer obsession and passion for innovation.

    Great Career place

    Cloud Architect (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsUnlimited vacation, no set work hours ( team spans time zones), 100% work from home with 2-3 weeks of travel per annum, decent training, salary at or above market, bonuses paid in full usually, 401K and stock options, and full benefits. It beats working at any US bank, healthcare setting, or consulting firm.

Consorganizational structure, team collaboration, leadership could use significant improvements

Advice to Senior ManagementCarefully consider organizational structure, make sure teams are collaborating, provide top down feedback on what you would like to see each team focused on improving, on ideas you have to make each team more innovative, share your appreciation or feedback on ideas being presented to the company, this will certainly help motivate and drive ambition, and also make for a highly collaborative environment.

Great place to work if you are an engineer

    Senior Manager (Former Employee)

ProsVery supportive of the people, great engineering culture in the core BUs.

ConsAs with any large organization it really matters what team you are on. It does feel like a large startup at times (with 15,000) people.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more attention for various BUs/projects and cull the ones that have no future instead of dragging it out.

    Good place for software engineer

    Staff Engineer (Former Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsRoad map is pretty clear. Keep top in the market. Good execution skill and focus on customers.

ConsThe product line is narrow. Not so many products in whole enterprise software stack.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore imagination and innovation.

Phenomenal company. Brilliant people. Awesome products. All-around great culture.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI love when companies invest in their employees and VMware is a great example of this. I had no experience in the department I was going into, but a training program was created to catch myself and several others up to speed. The managers monitored our progress and made sure all our questions were answered throughout the training. I work with a great team who not only support each other, but mentor each other in order to have continuous growth.

ConsAlthough the managers promote growth and development, it is more directed to the permanent employees than the contractors. I've noticed favoritism and politics which is frustrating. Those who are favored get ahead and are recognized, while those who have the potential and the drive, are ignored.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't forget about the contractors - invest in their growth and development even when training has been completed. End favoritism. What's the point? Employees will notice and it will cause a separation within the department.

    Layering complexity upon complexity

    Strategic Account Manager (Current Employee)
    Palo Alto, CA

ProsVMware has a fantastic campus and interesting technical vision - great pay and benefits.

ConsThe company often has schizophrenic changes of direction, incessant feature moving and repacking to the products which causes customer frustration and confusion, selling too many futures and not enough of the 1.0 versions of buggy software and complex internal process ( with respect to understanding and serving customers )
