I have been working at VMware full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great company culture of giving back to the community. Top executives are smart and there is lots of opportunity for company growth.

    Cons

Lack of process--operates like a start up. Lack of a presence solution makes collaboration a challenge--heavy email culture, death by power point and unnecessary conference calls. Work load is insane, resulting in churn and burn.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage mid managers to mentor and develop employees and be true to the culture and values.

I have been working at VMware full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

it's always moving like a startup, there's no standing still and you have every opportunity to be part of changing the face of IT. There's no shortage of competition but you always feel like the leading contender.

    Cons

difficult to navigate, sometimes lacks coordination across business units and a definite lack of organized processes. Sometimes a bit too much ADHD but likely required in the cloud computing market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

we went from being an innovative powerhouse with a strong focus on customers to being more focused on the market and follow the money. Don't lose the customer obsession and passion for innovation.

I worked at VMware full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very supportive of the people, great engineering culture in the core BUs.

    Cons

As with any large organization it really matters what team you are on. It does feel like a large startup at times (with 15,000) people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention for various BUs/projects and cull the ones that have no future instead of dragging it out.

I have been working at VMware full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Unlimited vacation, no set work hours ( team spans time zones), 100% work from home with 2-3 weeks of travel per annum, decent training, salary at or above market, bonuses paid in full usually, 401K and stock options, and full benefits. It beats working at any US bank, healthcare setting, or consulting firm.

    Cons

organizational structure, team collaboration, leadership could use significant improvements

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Carefully consider organizational structure, make sure teams are collaborating, provide top down feedback on what you would like to see each team focused on improving, on ideas you have to make each team more innovative, share your appreciation or feedback on ideas being presented to the company, this will certainly help motivate and drive ambition, and also make for a highly collaborative environment.

I have been working at VMware as a contractor

    Pros

I love when companies invest in their employees and VMware is a great example of this. I had no experience in the department I was going into, but a training program was created to catch myself and several others up to speed. The managers monitored our progress and made sure all our questions were answered throughout the training. I work with a great team who not only support each other, but mentor each other in order to have continuous growth.

    Cons

Although the managers promote growth and development, it is more directed to the permanent employees than the contractors. I've noticed favoritism and politics which is frustrating. Those who are favored get ahead and are recognized, while those who have the potential and the drive, are ignored.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget about the contractors - invest in their growth and development even when training has been completed. End favoritism. What's the point? Employees will notice and it will cause a separation within the department.

I have been working at VMware full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

VMware has a fantastic campus and interesting technical vision - great pay and benefits.

    Cons

The company often has schizophrenic changes of direction, incessant feature moving and repacking to the products which causes customer frustration and confusion, selling too many futures and not enough of the 1.0 versions of buggy software and complex internal process ( with respect to understanding and serving customers )
