If you work at a male dominated company in Texas is that an oxymoron?

I have been working at Valero Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

In San Antonio there are few head quartered companies, so locally it is considered a great place.

    Cons

Few or no personal growth opportunities unless they have to with Valero sponsored charities. Professional accreditation's are hard to maintain as academic or other qualifications or certifications are not valued as most employees here worked their way up. Men are rewarded on their potential, women rewarded on deliverables.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The tight grip on spending does not always translate into savings or productivity. Employee loyalty is born from respect, mutual and otherwise.

I worked at Valero Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits! That's pretty much it as far as good things about this facility. There isnt much that is good about the way the employees are treated.

    Cons

Poor work/life balance. Horrible local and corporate management! HR dept. manager and employees are unfriendly, they do NOT have the back of any employee who goes to them for advice or assistance. They throw employees under the bus for information that was told to them in confidence and help the corporate management come up with bogus information to retaliate and set up employees to charge them with suspension and possible termination. Supervisors are hired because they are friends of somebody in management (its not what, but who, you know or whos butt you kiss that matters). The favoritism that is shown by management is so completely blatant its unbelievable. You are forced to donate money to United Way and to volunteer at a Valero approved event.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop playing favorites and punishing the employees who are good workers and letting the bad employees get away with murder. Stop setting up good employees and making stuff up to punish them and padding your own pockets in the process.

I worked at Valero Energy as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Decent people, although the overall employee morale left something to be desired. Small refinery is convenient and easy to access. Good resources available to help complete the job.

    Cons

Too much of a police-state mentality. Worst internet policy of any company I've served; basic resources like personal E-mail are considered in violation of computing policies. Company in general does not appear to respect contractors and makes little effort to retain them when the economy heads south. Contractors further receive all employee E-mail invites for venues, picnics, and the like but are never allowed to attend. Unlike every other refinery in the area, the company does not offer a flexible 9/80 work schedule.

I worked at Valero Energy as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is decent and the benefits seem average. If you are the type of person that likes to goof off most of the day, you can do it here. If you just want something significant to help beef up your resume, this is a good place for that.

    Cons

There are a lot of people who like to goof off most of the day. Not only do they get away with it, they get job offers. The hard workers that I know are left to work a semester at a time with no promise of a job.

    Dress code is business dress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not assume that all college students are "kids" that are lining up at the doors for an opportunity to worship at the alter of Valero. There are other career options available to the talented students. We probably need you a lot less than you need us.

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative in Arlington, TX

I worked at Valero Energy full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - If you have a good staff and everyone chips in workloads can be lowered for everyone in the long run
    - The job can be really easy, if properly staffed
    - you will get to know your customers, some people come in almost everyday might get invited to a party

    Cons

    - Sometimes expected to do a lot of work
    - night shift is the wost your all alone and expected to do everything deliveries come in early and you gotta count the boxes
    - Lot's of theft you really can't do anything about but you will hear about it if something gets stolen in mass amounts
    - messy store sometimes, due to so much foot traffic
    - You could end up running the register the WHOLE shift sometimes, then get yelled at for not getting any work done

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember your employees most of the time are on the register tying to keep the lines from building up and work is just really tough to get done sometimes.
