    About par for the course.

    Senior Process Engineer (Current Employee)
    Port Arthur, TX

    ProsGood pay. Good benefits.

ConsOverall, management has a problem separating their personal favorites from the better performers. Doing so fosters an environment where those on the front line will drag their feet or figure a way to resist, challenge or oppose any ideas from the top just simply out of spite. In times of great operating margins, this results in leaving money (profit) on the table. In times of tight operating margins, this can result in a negative cash flow as opposed to a positive one.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be great for management to consider being more objective when choosing who to promote into key leadership positions.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Unremarkable

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Wilmington, CA

ProsDecent compensation and benefits after you have been for awhile. Knows how to raise safety awareness. Volunteer acitivites are robust.

ConsLittle direction on how to advance in the company, little to no active development even for employees that are high potential contributors. Upper management are a) overly secretive and b) deceptive at times. Outright lied to by Corporate and HR who talked me into staying until after the new year to recieve an annual bonus, then after I left changed their minds without bothering to communicate that. Slimy. Entire department turned over whlil I was there, 5 years. That did not appear to phase anyone much.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo what you say you are going to do. People get restless when changes are no communicated well - so, communicate.

Valero is a strong company that treats its employees good

    Process Engineer (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsStable work environment, great opportunities to get ahead if you show work commitment and innovation.

ConsCompany runs lean so you get a large variety of responsibilities

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to connect with and be more aware of the various responsibilities subordinates maintain. Make it easier to get promotions by being more straightforward and not inflate employee reviews

Not what it used to be

    Maintenance (Current Employee)
    Benicia, CA

ProsDecent pay and decent benefits. The opportunity to promote is still an option.

ConsValero does the bare minimum to keep employees. They used to pride themselves on being an industry leader. Now they seem to do just enough to get lost in the pack. They have killed the desire to go the extra mile.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees like they are your number one asset, and your employees might start to feel valued again. The current opinion is that the employees are just a nuisance to be endured. You reap what you sow.

Reasonable benefits, but not enough to counter the low pay vs. work overload.

    Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
    Austin, TX

ProsLots of locations (Texas), very nice/extensive medical benefits, 2 weeks paid vacation after first year, 3 weeks after second year

ConsExtremely low pay for the amount of work needing to be done. CSRs have entirely way too much to do in an 8 hour period. Gloves are not provided, even when cleaning extremely unsanitary areas such as the bathroom, or changing the trash at the stations. My location is constantly understaffed because of the heavy workload combined with the low pay. Hours are restricted. Give more than one manager per location; the managers are more overworked than the subordinate CSRs.

Advice to Senior ManagementOne of your slogans is that "Our employees are our #1 asset." Keep true to this by not skimping out on employee pay; the amount of physical labor that is done in 8 hours is worth way more than 7.30/hr.
