I have been working at Vancity full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Above average time off, especially at entry level
    - Standard, but very good, health benefits
    - Company has events for staff a couple times a year that are often creative and fun
    - Generally does the right thing
    - Super, super active in many community programs and organizations

    Cons

    - Training is okay, could be improved, probably below average, but not worst
    - Pay is good for the people at the bottom, but not always that competitive in the middle roles
    - Culture is resistant to change, but that can be a good thing sometimes
    - Depending on the office, it can be laid back or hard working

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Review compensation for some roles as they may be outdated and non-competitive
    - Some roles have lower requirements and higher or equal pay, so some roles should be paid less actually
    - Eliminate the bureaucracy to become nimbler so the company can grow
    - Less micro-managing please, so things can get done faster - see "operating at the speed of trust"

    Pros

7 hour work days, annual merit increase, plenty of employee recognition, job stability

    Cons

many older staff because of job security making it difficult to move up with all the more qualified old people working here

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I worked at Vancity full-time

    Pros

Flexible work schedule and friendly work environment within department. Good company to work for but it also depends on your manager. Good if you have a good manager support but crappy if he/she doesn't give a crap of you. There are annual staff events that brings the entire Vancity organization together.

    Cons

Limited support from other departments and low morale. I've seen many people were let go by this organization thus created a low morale in the department. Everyone is afraid that they will be next person to be let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to front line staff. Sometimes the FSR are busy as hell and the line is super long. Management should help out FSRs if the line is long so the members won't be unhappy. The TV screens can only keep the member occupied for a limited number of minutes.

    I worked at Vancity

    Pros

Good caring management, provides work life balance, good employee morale. Lots of fun activities and extremely good benefits package, insurance, health, etc

    Cons

no real cons. the only thing i can think of is may be competitive spirit lacking, lack of ambitious employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

may be we can cut down budgets on some of the leisure activities (which are too many) and instead use them towards employee bonus/ community/ etc

I have been working at Vancity

    Pros

Casual work environment, competitive salary, breaks during shifts, flexible work schedule, vacation pay, simplified interview progress, team orientated work place

    Cons

poorly designed training section, pressure on entry level employees, unfair treatment between new employees and old employees and criticize on certain behaviour pattern

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Extend the training from 3 weeks to one month. Specify the training into 2 sections: one week for the online training and 3 weeks for hands on.

    I worked at Vancity

    Pros

The best reasons to work for VanCity is that it's a place where you can truly feel good about your job and the impact it makes in the community. And the people were truly decent people that worked hard to be consistent in what was said and done. I felt senior management really wanted to "do the right thing" in all aspects.

    Cons

When I worked there, Dave Mowat was still CEO, and I could see a growing rift between how things were done and a "work hard, play hard" culture he wanted to develop. Ultimately, I'm pleased to see that he has gone onto other things and the new CEO returned to the "decency" foundations of the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build on your strengths! People were very committed to the VanCity proposition, and loved their jobs. Revel in the fact that you don't have to make the same kind of profits of other banks - it frees you up to spend more on doing what's right.

A good comfortable place to work, but you'll hate the sales pressure and get bored quickly.

I have been working at Vancity

    Pros

The job itself becomes comfortable after a short while and they treat their employees well when it comes to little perks.

    Cons

They will push really hard for sales so they can meet their numbers. This is more so than at other financial institutions because they aren't as big and thus don't have as many options for income and growth already laid out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pushing so hard for sales of products that most people don't need and start giving decent raises.
