Former Employee – worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center

ProsGreat reputation in the community.

ConsThey do not spend money on existing units, they only build more so as to make more money. If you're an older nurse, watch out. You make too much salary and they are looking for reasons to get rid of you. They lost $300 million in endowments due to the economy and they are looking for experienced nurses to get rid of.

Advice to Senior ManagementPatient safety took a backseat to the dollar when you discounted the value of nurses who have many years experience.

Current Employee – been working at Vanderbilt University Medical Center

ProsVanderbilt University and the Medical Center are recognized across the country.

ConsVery poor communication from some members of middle and some senior management. Not always consistent policy or the way policy is applied.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit sticking your head in the sand and/or plugging your ears. There are problems here that need to be addressed. When scores are constantly low regarding the performance of management perhaps it's time for new managers. Don't believe everything your middle managers are telling you. Go out and spend time with your people in the trenches and the front line and listen to what they have to say and don't punish them for telling you the truth. You might learn why you end up having the turnover you have.
