I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Incredible worklife balance has kept me here. The people are amazing and I honestly believe that VG cares about us.

    Cons

I have had no luck at all with advancement.

I have been working at Vanguard

    Pros

Very friendly employees and good campus amenities impressed me in their career meetings. They also encourage women leadership and advocate diversity.

    Cons

They do not offer sponsorship for international students so this might be one important point that contradicts to their diversity advocacy.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time

    Pros

    + benefits package is fantastic
    + not a job, it's a career
+ easy to move jobs within the company and learn a lot more
+ great flexibility with working hours

    Cons

    - not many chances for innovation
    - bonus may not reflect actual performance
    - VERY hierarchical

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

= try to flatten the hierarchy to promote more expression of opinion and drive more conversation
= promote innovation and provide opportunities to do so
= reevaluate the process for performance bonus and give more transparency on the subject

I have been working at Vanguard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

MANY different positions in the company to choose from. Movement to other departments is easy and even encouraged. Good benefits right through the door and a great 401k match. Aetna insurance leaves something to be desired but is adequate coverage.

    Cons

The trend seems to be in cost saving. They are moving to a new desk structure with VERY little space. Not just the peons but all the way up to middle management is in the same layout. Every department has the cancerous employee. Sucking up space and resources and doing very little.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove the cancerous employees and provide real incentives to do a good job.

I have been working at Vanguard

    Pros

The people are what makes this company great - Vanguard has a nice company culture. Employees are involved in community service and volunteer work regularly, the work-life balance is apparent, and people are just easy to talk to.

    Cons

I started in a phone role (answering incoming client phone calls), and it was a very difficult experience. You are limited to the amount of breaks you can take throughout the day, lunches are often reduced to only 30 minutes, and any time that you want off the phones has to be approved. It was a physically and emotionally draining job. If you can start higher up in the company you will have a better experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It needs to be easier for employees who work in retail to take time off. Those are the most demanding roles, both physically and emotionally, but they get very little flexibility and understanding.

    Pros

What a great company this used to be. The employees made this a great work environment. The culture under John Bogle's reign was one of family. Everyone wanted to help their co-workers.

    Cons

Veterans are now being shown the door becuse of their age. Vanguard only hires people with less than 3 years experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your experienced professionals who care about the company and the share holders.

I have been working at Vanguard

    Pros

Vacation days. If you work hard your job is usually secure. It pays the bills. The small ones.

    Cons

Poor pay. Micro management. The longer you work at Vanguard, the more you tend to be unhappy. People are happy when they first start, and after you work really hard and see your year end, you realize that you are not appreciated. They give the top 5 % good raises, but the rest are expendable.
Phone groups are the worst. I worked both on and off the phones.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your crew half as good as you treat your clients.

    Pros

Coworkers Job stability Vacation Telecommuting Ethics

    Cons

    Pay
    Health Benefits
Always working not able to disconnect
    Career growth minimilized

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The organization has changed so much in the last 5 years and it is not the same place to work. Their VADP program brings book smart college students in and gives them management roles. Many do not have enought life experience to be able to manage people. Many managers but not enough people who can actually lead and coach
