    Good company.Improvement needed.

Engineer (Current Employee) Salt Lake City, UT

ProsI love my job.Company takes care for employees.I wish all companies are like that.If you like to stay forever to work in production, then this is excellent place to work for.If you think about moving your career upward,it will not be the best place for you.

ConsI work for Varian in Salt Lake City.It is family place. That mean management will always give a job or promotion to family member. You can have better education,experience...Nothing matters. You have to be family connected to management to be first in line for promotion.I applied for different management positions and never got any.Sometimes not even an interview.I am Masters Degree holder,VA,experienced in managing people, speak German and Chinese.Sometimes I apply for position that require German or Chinese language.Somehow people that do not speak any foreign language get that position. It is sad to be production worker and have Masters Degree.I am having interviews with GE and Adobe so I hope they will recognize my talent.I come from minority.I feel my disadvantage in Varian is because I am member of minority group.I see diversity among production workers, not among management.Few people made it.Very sad.

Advice to Senior ManagementI see every day big sign that Varian is EOE.Yes,it is on that piece of paper. Please think about how to attract the best talent not just family members.

Great people to work with, not much upward mobility, compensation for engineers subpar

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIt's a very stable company, only one layoff so far. The people here are really nice.

ConsPretty much no upward mobility, not a very dynamic environment. Compensation is average to low.

    Seems to be okay

Engineering Intern (Former Employee) Salt Lake City, UT

ProsMost of the people are pretty nice and easy to work with. Culture is fairly laid back. As an intern, I had a good amount of freedom to do things that interested me.

ConsThis company needs a lesson on efficiency. Perhaps I'm just new to the workforce and don't understand, but it just seemed like none of the divisions worked well together.

Decent work environment, lots of politics

Technician (Former Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsMost of the employees are friendly, with time comes nice vacation packages and other benefits, bus/tram pass (if requested). If you have ambition you can stand out.

ConsThe internals of the company have become more political. A person used to be promoted based on merit, now it is about who you know.

Advice to Senior ManagementVarian Medical Systems is a great company, it is widely known in the industry. To stay in this position more of a focus needs to be placed deep in the heart of the organization with the workers.

No Carrier Growth. Lack of Recognition for Hard work/Dedication. Good for ppl who talk more rather than who really work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

    Pros1. Stability of the company
    2. Good work environment

Cons1. There is no carreer growth
    2. Lack of recognition for hardworking & dedicated people.
    3. Salary is not based on the contribution to the project.
    4. PPL who talk more gets more attention and benefit and hike rather than who are really working.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the ppl who does not do any job.... some people staying here for very long...but there is no contirbution in any manner.....Also, have ppl who talk more to work also...not just talking,.

Work you to death and long hours are expected to be the norm.

District Service Manager (Former Employee) Atlanta, GA

Proscompetitive pay and benefits and most employees are inspired top do the best possible thing for the patients that get treated on the equipment

Constoo many hours required and management in a constant state of flux and seems to always be trying something new rather than keep practices that work and make sense.

Advice to Senior Managementinclude your middle level managers before sending out edicts that change the culture and direction of the motivation of the people who have the most contact with customers.

    Outsourced IT

Security Engineer (Current Employee) Palo Alto, CA

ProsIt doesn't seem to be high pressured and there are a lot of people that have been at Varian for a long time.

ConsThey've outsourced a lot of their functions to Infosys at the time. The network works. They have not put a lot of work in making it cutting edge.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt environement is poor
