    Hoping to survive layoffs

Member of Technical Staff - Systems Engineering Consultant (Former Employee) Colorado Springs, CO

ProsThe setting in Colorado Springs is beautiful. The weather is nice. The facility is clean. The health and 401(k) benefits are very good. The pay is good.

ConsThe pay is good, but after reaching a certain level, raises become mediocre. There were limited opportunities for learning skills not directly related to the job. Even training for skills essential to the job was hard to get.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop off-shoring every job that can be done remotely. Provide training besides computer-based training.

If you like to drink the kool-aid and look past the terrible customer service.....sign-up.

    Operations Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGreat salary, OK benefits (compared to market)

ConsThere are shrinking perks. The company has gotten huge.....and it acts like it. No pension..less contribution to health care. Leaders are always afraid of something which makes for an unreasonably stressful environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove customer service and perception regardless of the cost. Blow your budget if necessary. You'll probably be fired or banned from Basking Ridge...but you'll be a hero!

    Forget about it!

Senior Tech (Former Employee) Dallas, TX

ProsSome great coworkers and exciting projects.

ConsClueless management. Very political. Dominated by the Indian mafia. Really headed downhill. Can't survive unless you're part of the club. Technical managers have no idea about the technology their teams are using.

    Advice to Senior Managementwake up.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Employee's have numbers, not names.

IT Help Desk Agent (Current Employee) Tampa, FL

ProsGreat opportunity to get high level enterprise experience.

ConsThey don't' care about you as a person, and they make you aware of that. There is plenty of opportunity for promotion but if you end up in a low level job, you will likely be stuck there as there is a constant drive to reduce RIFs. Additionally, there are constant RIFs. Frequently, you will find the position you are aspiring to dissolved into your job without raise in title or pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementMetrics are wonderful tools but using them as a threatening tool instead of a motivating factor is absurd. Threats do not supplement actual investment in employee morale.

    Low cost health care
    Good pay

    ConsManagement doesn't trust anyone
They hire mangers to count numbers not job functions
Quality of life low due to work stress

    Great benefits while it lasted!

Applications Support (Current Employee) Irving, TX

ProsBenefits...the best in the industry if you ask me and that's the only reason I hadn't left the company.

No pros since shortly after 2000. This is where Bell Atlantic screwed it all up. We had a great time working at GTE prior to the merger. Anything after that has been years of turmoil and confusion.

If you are a college graduate willing to work for half of what you deserve, apply here. It will be a good start to your career as long as you treat this place as a stepping stone to other things.

ConsAnything after the Bell Atlantic/GTE merger has been years of sitting on a raging bull. You never knew when or where you would be moved from one organization to the next. The results usually landed you in a position where you lost skill set and expertise. The lay offs kept coming for years...multiples some years. 2014 had one major one in January and now another in June. That was the end of the line for me after 15 years.

HR is always raising banners and shooting off fireworks about how you can pick and choose your career path. Bogus. I've tried multiple times to move groups only to be denied by management or the position lost to an upcoming lay off. There may be organizations within Verizon where you can be happy and move up. IT is not one of those organizations.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop reorganizing the groups so much. You are now in a situation where you have lost all of your expertise because you keep moving staff from one job to another and/or you have laid them off. No sooner than I learn the systems I'm supporting, I get moved to a new team. The issue with that is no one is there to teach me about the new systems I'm supporting. You are heading down the wrong road.

Way too many decisions are being made by upper-level management when they really don't understand the impact it has on the employees, their job satisfaction, and their ability to perform their jobs. Eventually, it will catch up with you.

    IT keeps getting worse

    Consultant (Former Employee)

ProsBenefits, co-workers some of the best with lots of business knowledge.

ConsDid not think it possible, but IT keeps getting worse. IT should be supporting the business side not forcing them to accept IT directives and analysis that do not help them and only make them angry. Give them what they want to run the business. IT is a global company and forcing its staff to go to an office when everyone is dispersed throughout the world makes no sense.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop pushing so much of IT offshore. Stop trying to make IT a startup. It's not.
