Former Employee - Retail Sales Representative in Denver, CO

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great pay
    great benefits
    amazing coworkers
    cools sales contests / prizes
As long as you don't steal or do anything super crazy you can't be fired - they will fire you for not hitting your quota

    Cons

Zero work life balance - you will work a holiday like 4th of July - random hours Friday 7-10am 2-8pm
You're micromanaged to the point they follow you around the store even if you're a top producer
Management hound you to come in on your day off...
Very high turn over rate - within a year my store had a 75% attrition rate - you can't run a company like that! Someone with 2 years of experience shouldn't know more than the assistant store manager, the store manager, and the district manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you ask a 4 year veteran to train, coach, and shadow new hires all day, don't complain about quota. I can not and will not do your job and mine, while you berate me in front of my peers.
I've watch sales reps who were more passionate, more caring, and delivered better results than myself get passed over for promotions I felt they deserved. The ones who would stop what they were doing to lend a helping hand, stay extra hours, and do what was right for the customer.
When people stick around for more than a year, treat them right. Stop dangling the promise of a promotion if you delivered constant results and then not promote someone.

Horrible Employee and Customer Culture especially in Retail. Unreal Sales pressure.

    I worked at Verizon Wireless

    Pros

Benefits and discounts. Can progress career if your smart about it.

    Cons

Now that I've been at another employer for over 8 months, I can honestly say how bad it was to work for Retail VZW over the last 3-4 years. The culture is non-existent. It is a sales pressure cooker that affords 0 work/life balance for Store Managers/ASMs. Imagine a day of at least 2 conference calls (1 hour long) where MGT discusses how to effectively force, lie, and manipulate customers into buying $150.00 worth of accessories per phone? These calls happen 7 Days a week. If your store is "honest" and tries to sell on relationship building and fair sales methods, you are forced to go on a different conference call in which the Director continues to reiterate how he doesn't think your getting the job done, and how easy other stores make it look. These "other" stores are so stressed out and don't want to deal with BS conference calls, they simply instruct their sales employees to "bundle" price... this essentially means lying. The people who lie are praised and the people who won't stand for unethical selling are punished. Any posts you see that are positive for VZW Retail, are most likely by the shady car-salesmen-like folks that are getting praise for flat out lying... or it is an attempt by VZW to make it sound like it is a good place to work. This company is evil and continually rolls out changes that screw the customer; as an employee you will be asked to spin this positively to your customer. Good luck if you apply here.

    Pros

Good salary but not worth it for the stress
    Cell phone bill half price
    Benefits are great

    Cons

    Rigid schedule
Management and HR are notorious for being misleading and have no idea what employees are dealing with
    Advancement is limited

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please understand that the employees are people and everything can not be handled by free cookies. I became disabled working for Verizon and the management had the nerve to write me up for excessive absences. I have cancer. They have no heart.

    Pros

Brand name, co-workers friendly and the customer relationships were great.

    Cons

The region leadership is poor. They do not adhere to their own credo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's useless to give advise. Until the leadership changes employees will be unhappy.

    I worked at Verizon Wireless

    Pros

50% off your Verizon wireless monthly service. They offer $300 a year towards the cost of your tacky sportswear uniform that you have to order from Lands End(Sears).

    Cons

Work/life balance is a ghost here. You will be transferred from store to store every time a district manager feels like it, which is roughly every 6 months. You will be working at least 45 minutes from where you live and working every night and weekend. Turnover is high because of this hostile environment, which means you will barely have two days off a week and therefore will be expected to work open to close. You will be coached by an overworked and underpayed manager at least once a day and they have to find something negative to coach you on or " it's not effective coaching". A "promotion" means going from rep to manager, which also means you will make $10k less a year for the next three years after your "promotion".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The present tenured human resources department is ineffective and oblivious to the actual work conditions in the field. They are overwhelmed with complaints about working conditions to the point that they are no longer researching the very same coachings that are being held against reps and management alike. They are merely approving whatever the manager has proved to be "coached" in the online coaching portal. these coachings are being solely written by the manager that is writing up the rep/manager in question.Whether it's true or false, as long as the manager says it is and has documented it ,who cares ?! I've seen two managers have a stroke while working here. You have been warned.

    Pros

Name, and name only. The only benefit is that when you mention Verizon people think it's the best. Notice that I said "think".

    Cons

No work-life balance. They push numbers constantly and harass you when you don't meet them even when they clearly see you doing everything you can to succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers at the 69th street location are unprofessional and unorganized. Suggest new management. People that actually care about helping the team instead of blaming them.

    Pros

Great hours, benefits and free coffee. Middle management was wonderful.

    Cons

Once the company became too big, employees held no importance. No appreciation, personal contact, empathy. Dynamic expectations, poor communication and upper management was non existent on the floor. Middle management did their very best, but, they were the unfortunate messangers when policy changed monthly. The expectations grew as morale sunk. No team mentality at the end. We were 'rewarded' with coins to redeem for coffee, candy sugary soda and high energy drinks. Go to your desk, pump out as many calls as you can, leave. Sad end to a once great company to work for. Too much stress on a daily basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of your office. Learn your employees names, pop in and say hello. (Upper management)

Verizon Wireless became one of the worst companies to work for.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at Verizon Wireless

    Pros

Excellent benefits: Annual bonus. 401k. 50% off monthly service. You control your annual income if you are hourly because overtime is practically unlimited. Tuition assistance that is paid upfront.

    Cons

Management does not support its employees during the customer survey process. The customer service & technical support metrics are based on customer satisfaction surveys. The company make company goals extremely difficult to achieve, ie: accessory sales for tech agents, add-a-lines, adding insurance and saying scripted messages during customer interactions. Management only know how's to micromanage and harass agents while they stand around and talk and laugh louldly with their peers (LAZY). STRESSFUL! STRESSFUL! STRESSFUL!!! If you suck, kiss and lick feet, you'll go far. Advancement is not based on your skills and ability to do the job. Its strictly based on WHO YOU KNOW OR SUCK, KISS AND LICK THE RIGHT FEET.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should go back to school and learn how to effectively manage. Verizon should eliminate the survey process, customers that does not get what they want responds negatively because the only time customers really call is for problems and to beg for something free. Remove repeat call from agents numbers(metrics). How do penalize an agent for calling in and you give the a 800 number and advise feel free to call anytime. Human resource really need to get truth from agents and fix all the way internal problems at the call centers that is continue to escalate. Verizon is not a great place to work! Management. Stop lying to the public. You will be stressed and on FMLA in no time.

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits and they are getting worse. Pay is ok if you live in the boondocks or the ghetto where you do not have a high cost of living. Why don't you build your facilities in the ghetto then you will get cheap rent and labor if your employees don't get shot or molested on their way to/from work.

    Cons

Everything from personal growth, time off policies, BREAKING THE LAW

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

STOP PROMOTING YOUR MINORITY/WOMEN aspect of your hiring. There is no balance and the non minorities and non women are getting screwed. Stop also screwing the customers like you have been doing.
