I worked at Verizon Wireless as a contractor

    Pros

Good camaraderie within the project management group. Opportunity to learn on the job. Overall good interaction with co-workers from all groups. Management provided sufficient resources to get the job done, even under tight deadlines.

    Cons

Developers were overworked and would push back when PMs and BAs needed answers that could only come from developers. Contractors were almost always rolled off, replaced with new ones, so you'd lose years of experience all the time.

    Advice to Management

When you can spend millions/billions in advertising dollars but skimp on pay and hiring contractors (rather than rolling them off after 2 years), you'll find things will greatly improve. Hire more US staff. Still too many Americans out of work, yet you keep bringing in people from overseas on Visas. They are wonderful, intelligent people, but they should not be comprising such a large percentage of your workers.

    Pros

Opportunity to work with Global Teams. Ability to manage large Onsite/Offshore teams

    Cons

Irregular Release Cycles, Unwanted work pressure. Poor Project Commitments from Management to business. Irrational Work Pressure

    Advice to Management

Don't over burn resources. As promised, lets teams to have work life balance and be more productive instead of working every single weekend with an emergency release.

I worked at Verizon Wireless as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

A relatively comfortable work environment with a decent work-life balance and plenty of learning opportunities. Casual Fridays are a bonus. Generally speaking, people stick to their 8 hour/day schedule (unless OT is required). Management is very accomodating with scheduling/vacation time. Employee benefits include 50% off wireless family service plans as well as a pension plan.

    Cons

Contractors are treated like second class citizens compared to employees. Some managers are stuck in their old ways performing job duties which results in routine micromanaging. Not uncommon to find people working through lunch. Very high turnover for contractors. On-site gym and annual company picnic exclude contractors.

    Advice to Management

Management should work on making contractors feel like they are actually part of a team in an effort to boost morale.

I worked at Verizon Wireless as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Verizon is a good company and I had the opportunity to work with a great team. The office building is located in a nice environment and the office space was also very good.

    Cons

It is very difficult to advance in the company due to the company culture and policies. The technologies being used for product/service development were not the latest and greatest.

    Advice to Management

    They should facilitate employee growth.

I worked at Verizon Wireless as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was a good exposure to the corporate world as a college student. The internship was treated like a true entry level job, so I was able to learn about the processes of starting a new job and how the corporate structure works.

    Cons

The program was less developed than was described. A lot of times there was not enough work for the interns to do and we would end up sitting on our computers wasting time to log our hours.

    Advice to Management

Make sure there is enough for interns to do if you are going to hire them.
